1. Introduction

Practical statistics is a handbook for librarians.

The term practical indicates that this is not aimed at researchers. It contains a number of research papers, but the framework is different. This is collection of texts, tables, graphics and links that are aimed at the people who actually run libraries.

Texts are tools. Practical statistics is designed as a tool for practitioners.

The author and editor (Tord Høivik) is not a practicing librarian, but has many years of experience as a library teacher, trainer, consultant - and also as a researcher.
