John LoPiccolo is the Conductor and Music Director of the Poway Symphony a position he has held since 2014. In this period, the Poway Symphony has experienced tremendous growth both artistically and musically. Before that he has been conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonia d’Amici, London, England and staff conductor for the Living Arts, New York production world tour of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. These performances have taken him throughout the United States, United Kingdom where he premiered the work in Belfast, Ireland, Trinidad, Canada, Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand. He also served on the conducting faculty at the Festival at Sandpoint and Brevard Music Center with Gunther Schuller for fifteen years.
He has performed concerts with Misha Dichter, Garrick Ohlsson, Alexander Toradze, Cecil Licad, Lorin Hollander, Andreas Bach, Daniel Heifetz, Stephanie Chase, Chin Kim, David Hickman, Carol Wencenc, Heide Lehwhalder, and William Corbett-Jones.
While in Idaho, under his leadership as Music Director and Conductor of the Idaho Falls Symphony the Orchestra witnessed unprecedented musical and artistic growth. He established the Idaho Falls Symphony Chorale, introduced the annual Pops Concert and achieved bringing a resident string quartet to Idaho Falls.
Each year the symphony performed concerts for school children from around the southeastern Idaho region. These concerts, programmed and conducted by Mr. LoPiccolo received critical acclaim for imagination and educational outreach. The symphony has toured eastern Idaho and appeared on local television, performing for the annual city of Idaho Falls Fourth of July celebration.
Before coming to Idaho Falls, Mr. LoPiccolo was Music Director and Conductor of the Helena Symphony Orchestra and Chorale, a position he held for nine seasons compiling a record of innovative and highly successful programs.
He has appeared as guest conductor with the Charlotte, Boise Philharmonic, Spokane, South Dakota, Dubuque, Waterloo/Cedar Falls, Bremerton, Great Falls, Lethbridge, Oshkosh, Fayetteville, Walla Walla, Florida Music Festival, Montana All-State, and Coeur d’ Alene Music Festival Orchestras.
Mr. LoPiccolo was appointed “cover conductor” for the Boise Philharmonic 1995-96 concert season and has been a judge for the Idaho State Civic Symphony, the Idaho Falls Symphony Young Artist Competition, and the Idaho Falls Music Club Scholarship Awards. He was the recipient of the 1996 Outstanding Service to the Community Award presented by the Greater Idaho Falls Chamber of Commerce.
John LoPiccolo attended the famed High School of Music and Art in New York City and holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Education from San Francisco State University and a Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting from Eastern Washington University.
When not studying one of the more than 1000 scores in his collection, LoPiccolo enjoys cooking, fixing all kinds of electronic devices, flying model airplanes and spending time with his wife Mary, daughter Sabrina and granddaughters Madeline and Kennedy.
