ULLI REINER, Four time Grammy Education nominee and 2017 Grammy Finalist winner is Conductor of the Symphonic Strings Orchestra with the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory.  Ms. Reiner is an adjunct faculty member of Palomar College, Concertmaster of the Palomar College Symphony Orchestra, Founder, Orchestra Manager and Concertmaster of the Poway Symphony Orchestra, Conductor/Founder and soloist with the Poway Symphonette and Orchestra Director with the Poway Unified School District. Ms. Reiner is a co-founder of the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra of San Diego and is the Artistic Director of the String Ensembles.  She was formerly conductor and co-founder of Civic Youth Orchestra’s Intermediate String Orchestra and Chamber String ensembles.  She was the founder and Orchestra Director of the Poway High School Symphony and has taught orchestra at Mt. Carmel High School, Black Mountain Middle School, Mesa Verde Middle School, and Meadowbrook Middle School.  She is currently the Orchestra Director at Bernardo Heights Middle School, Twin Peaks Middle School, and also is the instructor for the Music Appreciation class offered to non-music students.  

A graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music, as a full scholarship recipient, Ms. Reiner received a Bachelor of Music Education degree with emphasis in violin and viola performance and went on to graduate study as first violin with the Graduate String Quartet in residence at San Diego State University, the University of Southern California, and the University of San Diego.  Her violin and viola teachers have included Melvin Ritter-Concert Artist, Tiberius Klausner-a former student of Ivan Galamian at Juilliard, Yukiko Kamei-assistant to Jascha Heifetz at USC, Noumi Fisher recording artist for MGM, Professor of Viola- Milton Thomas at USC and her father, Rudolf Reiner.

Ms. Reiner’s musical studies began at the age of 3 ½, playing cornet, taught by her father, who attended the Bruckner Conservatory of Music in Linz, Austria.  She played trumpet in both elementary and junior high school, was also a regular member of the Brass Band of St. Louis and played trumpet in her family’s church Brass Quintet throughout college.  She began her violin studies at the age of 11, also with her father as her first teacher.

As a professional violinist, she has performed with the San Diego Symphony, San Diego Opera, Starlight Opera, San Diego Chamber Orchestra, Cabrillo Chamber Orchestra, St. Louis Municipal Opera, the St. Louis Philharmonic, the Alexandria String Quartet and in numerous orchestras in the San Diego area.  As a certified private instructor of Suzuki and traditional violin, her students have won numerous awards and scholarships leading to professional careers in music.  She has performed under conductors Leonard Slatkin, Alexis Hauser, David Atherton, Peter Eros and Walter Susskind to name a few. She has also enjoyed performing in the entertainment industry under such great artists as Andy Williams, Henry Mancini, Johnny Matthias, Angela Landsbury, Carol Channing, Yul Brynner, Lauren Bacall, Vincent Price and Zero Mostel, among many other top performers.  She has also worked in the recording industry, having made commercials for both local and national corporations.

Ms. Reiner is a member of the California Music Educators Association, Suzuki Association of the Americas, Suzuki Association of San Diego, served on the Board of Directors of the American String Teachers Association, is currently the President of the CalASTA-San Diego Branch and serves as an adjudicator for CMEA, the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association, the Philharmonic Society of Orange County, MTA and for the Grossmont College Woman’s Committee. She currently hosts and founded the annual PUSD Middle School Orchestra Festival with such distinguished guest adjudicators as Jung- Ho Pak the Artistic Director of the Cape Cod Symphony and Interlochen School of the Arts, Dana Zimbric Music Director of the California Chamber Orchestra and Dr. Ellen Weller, Music Director of the Palomar Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Reiner also founded and hosts the annual PUSD String Solo/Ensemble Festival.  She was recognized in 1991 and again in 1993 by Outstanding Young Women of America and, in 2000, and was elected to the prestigious Who's Who of American Teachers.  Since 1995 she has led successful international concert tours to Salzburg, Vienna, London and Paris, conducting the Civic Youth Orchestra Chamber Strings and her "Mostly Mozart Orchestra," comprised of students from the Poway Unified School District.  She was invited to conduct at the American String Teachers National Convention in Reno, Nevada, in 2005, and also was the guest conductor for the San Diego Unified School District Honor Orchestra in the spring of 2005.

Ms. Reiner recently completed teacher training under the Mark O'Connor American Music methodology and hosted the Mark O'Connor workshop which was held at Bernardo Heights Middle School in December of 2015.  She conducts the all camp orchestra at the annual O'Connor Summer Music Camp held in New York City since 2016.  She is certified in books one-four of the O'Connor Method.

In December of 2014 her Poway Symphonette was invited and performed at the Vienna Advent Festival and performed at the Vienna City Hall, St. Stephan’s Cathedral, St. Peter’s Church and at the Melk Monastery.  In the summer of 2016 her Poway Symphonette performed in prestigious concert halls in Beijing, Xian and Shanghai China.  She was also featured as a violin soloist.

Ms. Reiner performs regularly as a violin soloist with the Palomar Symphony, Poway Symphony, Poway Symphonette and with the Maryland University Symphony Orchestra in St. Louis, Missouri.  Ms. Reiner’s ensembles are sought after to perform in international festivals around the globe. In the summer of 2018 she will travel to the Salzburg Festival with her Poway Symphonette to perform in Prague, Vienna, the Melk Monastery and at the prestigious Salzburg Festival and Mozarteum. 

Ms. Reiner was also a consultant working with the founder of the Kids College of San Diego in forming a startup-string program for the San Marcos School District. She is currently in her third year as a consultant with the Global Education Elite Pre-College study programs in China through UCSD.  Her Poway Symphonette and PUSD schools have currently placed as semi-finalists for 2017-18 in the American Prize National Music Competition.  

Ms. Reiner commissioned composer Dr. Madelyne Bryne of Palomar College to compose the Decorah Bald Eagle Violin Concerto.  This original composition was performed with the Palomar Symphony Orchestra in May of 2015 and was performed in China on two performance tours.  Plans for the future include producing an educational DVD/CD which will be made available to educational institutions across the country in bringing awareness to wildlife preservation, a life-long passion of Ms. Reiner.

Ms. Reiner was awared the top ten Grammy Education Finalist Award in May of 2017 for her work and dedication to education. 

Ms Reiner also has many interests outside of music.  Besides her work as an avid supporter of wildlife and in photography of nature, coummunity service in many places of worship, she holds a student pilot’s license flying Piper Cherokee planes and is a member of Woman of Aviation and Golden State Aviation in El Cajon, California.  Most recently she has also taken up falconry studies and Mandarin Chinese.
