Join me for a full day of coastal-inspired creativity! In this immersive workshop, you will learn how to build a beautiful, functional ceramic lighthouse.
Standing approximately 25 to 30cm tall and crafted from durable stoneware clay, your lighthouse will be perfectly suited for a prominent spot in your home or as a weatherproof feature in your garden.
What You’ll Create: We have a full day to ensure we don't rush the intricate details that make a lighthouse so special:
The Morning (Construction): We will spend the morning using slab-building techniques to construct the main tower of the lighthouse and the clever removable top. The top is designed specifically to hold a tealight or a small set of battery-operated lights, allowing your creation to actually "glow" from the lantern room.
The Afternoon (Detailing & Colour): Once the structure is sound, we’ll move on to the fun part! You’ll have plenty of time to customise your lighthouse using some sprig moulds to create tiny shells and anchors, or add detailed stonework etc. Finally, we will use underglazes to paint directly onto the wet clay, allowing you to add classic stripes, weathered effects, or vibrant coastal colours.
Complexity Levels 4-5: The Crafter
This full-day session is designed for those who enjoy a detailed project. While I will guide you through every stage with live demonstrations, the construction and fine detail work make this a rewarding challenge for ambitious beginners and more experienced potters alike.
Workshop Details:
Thursday 11th June @ Turner's Art Studio Lumsdale Road, Matlock, DE4 5EX. 10:00 AM – 3:30 PM. £69 per person.
Lunch: We will take an approximate 30-minute break in the middle of the day. Please bring your own lunch along, but tea and coffee will be provided throughout the session to keep the creative energy flowing!
Materials: All stoneware clay, tools, underglazes, and professional firing are included in the price. Please remember to bring an apron to protect your clothes.
Please Note: Pottery is a slow and careful process. Your handcrafted lighthouse will need time to dry thoroughly before being fired in my kiln. Your finished piece will be ready for collection from the venue approximately two to three weeks after the workshop.
