Advisees have won prestigious awards such as 2nd, 3rd prizes in UCSD World Data Mining Competitions, Student Travel Awards, the Best Poster Award in Top International Conferences, Fellowships from Microsoft, Samsung Humantech Thesis Awards, Undergraduate Research Program Thesis Awards.
Chanyoung Park, a member of POSTECH Data mining Lab (http://dm.postech.ac.kr), won the 10th place (top 1.7%) in the ACM RecSys Challenge 2015 (http://2015.recsyschallenge.com/) in which more than 560 teams from 49 countries have participated. The competition is the official challenge of the ACM RecSys conference, the premier international conference on recommender systems. The goal of this year's competition was to predict 1) whether the user will buy something or not, and if he/she is buying, 2) what items he/she will buy. The proposed model will be published and presented in the ACM RecSys conference 2015.
Our paper, "Scalable and Parallelizable Processing of Influence Maximization for Large-Scale Social Networks", won the best poster award which was chosen out of 150 full and short papers. IEEE ICDE is one of top conferences in database and data mining area. The best poster award is given to the paper presenting the most impressive result.
With a 150 node high performance computing cluster we're able to complete larger scale research projects and advanced computation problems.
Each cluster node has 24 GB memory, 3 TB hard disk space and 2 hexa-core CPUs (in total, 3600 Cores, 3.6 Terabyte memory, 450 Terabyte HDD). By deploying a 150 node Dell PowerEdge R610 rack server cluster with Intel® Xeon® processor 5500 series and Dell PowerConnect 6248 Ethernet switches housed within PowerEdge Rack 4210 server enclosures, POSTECH created a flexible and powerful HPC solution that can scale to meet the department’s growing research needs.
Professor Yu comments, “Working on data-intensive research projects such as developing intelligent search engines is now possible for our students and faculty.”
