Friends of Possilpark Greenspace believe that the Clay Pit could form part of an amazing inner-city conservation project for the benefit of the local community and the wider city.  We are currently seeking to engage the local community about their feelings on this and also network with potential partners across the area to explore these possibilities.

The Clay Pit is a small area of urban wilderness about two miles from the centre of Glasgow on the Canal corridor leading from Spiers Wharf to Maryhill Locks.  Hidden away opposite Firhill Stadium on the south-west slopes of Hamiltonhill, the Clay Pit is shaped like a boot, curving round from Firhill Basin in the north to Applecross Basin in the south, snuggled in between the canal and the edge of Hamiltonhill.  Adjacent sites include Panmure Street, the Westercommon High-rise flats, Westercommon School, Hamiltonhill Allotments, the Emmaus Project and the Headquarters of British Waterways Scotland. 

The route along the eastern edge of the canal from Applecross Basin to Firrhill Basin is currently listed as an aspirational link for development according to the council's Core Path Network plan.

There are two main entrances.  One is behind the British Waterways Headquarters at Applecross Basin.  The other is sandwiched between the Allotment and the School at the top end of Ellesmere Street.  It is also possible to walk into the site from the Nolly Brig over the canal at Panmure Street and from an access point at Westercommon Flats.

Part of the land is owned by the council and part by British Waterways (please see map on info sheet appended below), but the area itself comes under the remit of the Canal Partnership.

Development plans have stalled owing to the Council's rejection of a plan to underground the electricity pylons which run through the site. 

What will become of the location now?
