Rotarian of the Week Mike Elgin had as his guest Cheri Whatley from the Rusty Hook Winery in Long Mott. She told us about the process of starting the winery and creating their own wines. She talked about plans for the future of the location and how it was impacted by the storms. Samples were given of the olive oils and balsamic vinegars available for purchase at the shop.

Rotarian of the Week Steve Marwitz had as his guest Rhonda Cummins from the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension. She spoke to us about how the storm impacted fishing in the gulf and spoke about the possible growth of an aquaculture industry. She also spoke about the changes in oyster harvesting regulations and how aquaculture would benefit the area.

Rotarian of the Week Rick Crabtree had as his guest Jim Blackburn. Jim is an environmental lawyer and professor at Rice University. He spoke to us about the process of buying and selling ecological services such as fishing, bird watching, and timber.

Rotarian of the Week Bob Bonar had as his guest Coach Richard Whitaker from the CCISD Athletc Department. He started by recognizing the tennis team, informed us about a new cross country coach, and spoke about the volleyball team. He then went on to talk about the history of performance by the football team. He gave us information about the guys on the team for this fall and his predictions about what we should expect this season.

Rotarian of the Week Raymond Butler had as his guest Captain David Adrian from the Matagorda Bay Pilots. He started his presentation by showing us a video about what a harbor pilot does. He then gave a history on pilotage and the pilots in Matagorda Bay. He spoke on specifics of the Port of Port Lavaca and what it takes to become a pilot.

Rotarian of the Week Terry Bull had as his guest Rotary District Governor Betty Ramirez-Lara. She gave her history with Rotary, shared her goals for the future, and encouraged us to add "is it serious fun?" to our 4 way test.

Rotarian of the Week Russell Cain had as his guest Gary Maler. Gary is the director of the Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University. After speaking on national outlooks, he spoke specifically about the housing market in Calhoun County. He showed projections on what population and employment growth are expected to do over the next 40 years, as well as lots of information on what the economy has done over the last few years and the impact it has, and will continue to have.

Rotarian of the Week Jason Anglin spoke to us about our local Memorial Medical Center. He gave us a history of the hospital and current services offered. He also gave us a financial history, where the hospital stands currently, and explained how payor sources benefit the hospital.

Rotarian of the Week Jack Wu was unable to attend, so Mike Rivet introduced his guest Rotarian Ron Flournoy. Ron spoke about the history of our club and how someone at the start of the club began collecting portraits of each president. Through the years the collection was mostly kept, though there were gaps. Ron has managed to collect a photo of all those that were missing and unveiled a board showing every president of the Port Lavaca Rotary from its beginning and including our upcoming president.

Rotarian of the Week Jim Story had as his guest coach Jason Bagwell. Jason is the head girls powerlifting coach for Calhoun High School. He brought with him his coaching team and students who were state champions recently. He spoke about the number of state champions he has coached in the last few years and what it takes to reach that accomplishment. He attributed the success to his girls being different from the rest of the competition.

Rotarian of the Week Melissa Sterling had as her guest Claud Jacobs of the Bluebonnet Youth Ranch. He began by thanking everyone for their financial support over the years. He explained what the ranch is and who it serves. He told us that the ranch now pays for students to attend college after high school.

He then went into talking about the book about the ranch. It was created because there was not a single location to find information about the history of the ranch and the people who have been involved in it over the years. Claud is the last living member of the founding group and didn't want the history to be lost. He didn't feel he could write the book in the way it deserved, so he worked with the University of Houston - Victoria and a writer to complete the project. He told us the history of the founding of the ranch in his own words.

Rotarian of the Week Raymond Butler couldn't be in attendance today, so Pam Lambden stood in to introdice our guest Jesse Hubbell from the Appraiser's office. He spoke about the difference between valuation and tax rate to clarify his job. He went on to talk about his two years in the position and what his job entails, before answering questions from the group.

Rotarian of the Week Skip Sockell had as his guest Rotarian Michele Morales from the YMCA in Port Lavaca. She gave us a brief history of the YMCA in the area, including the move into the new facility a year ago. She talked about the number of employees they have and how many they are expected to grow by. She spoke about the new management of the pools in Port Lavaca and Point Comfort. She also talked a out current programs for kids and the upcoming summer camps.

Rotarian of the Week Sara Rodriguez had as her guest Maria Walton from The Harbor Children's Alliance & Victim Center. She told us about the services offered including the crisis hotline, counseling services, education and training, benevolence program, and child welfare advocacy. She explained the process a child goes through when making an outcry and how the process has changed since the center began assisting.

Rotarian of the Week Jesse Rodriguez had as his guest Del Ornelas, III, from the Lucia Ornelas Foundation. He told us about the founding of the foundation and recognized Rotarians who have helped grow the organization. He then shares the programs the foundation offers, including $15,000 in scholarships, school supply and shoe donations, Thanksgiving dinner baskets for families, gifts and meals for Christmas, and many others.

Rotarian of the Week Mike Rivet had as his guest Ginny Stafford from Mid-Coast Family Services. She spoke about the renovations and expansions to the shelter in Victoria. We watched a short video about the types of services they offer and she elaborated on how they can help people in our communities.

Rotarian of the Week Dr. Tim McFarland had as his guest Robin Harvey with the Pregnancy Health Center of the Crossroads Area. First Dr. McFarland took a few minutes to explain what the term "death spiral in insurance" means. As he put it, insurance companies have felt a need to increase premiums due to a number of reasons, this has caused fewer people to want to pay those rates, and thus making a need to increase premiums further. This cycle continues to go around and the result is what is called the death spiral.

Our speaker then came up to talk to us about what services a crisis pregnancy offers to women, and what is happening in our area to open such a clinic.

Rotarian of the Week Steve Marwitz had as his guest Rotarian Dr. James Cowley. Dr. Cowley spoke on the new TEA rating system. He explained the community impact on the score our school district receives. He illustrated how the grade will be calculated and what scores our schools are currently receiving.

Rotarian of the Week Scott Hollingsworth had as his guest City Manager Robert Bradshaw. He spoke about the growth Port Lavaca has been experiencing and gave information about growth that is coming. He spoke about a push to partner with other cities in the area to promote a united front when courting businesses and speaking to legislators.

Rotarian of the Week Tania French had as her guests Chief Colin Rangnow of the Port Lavaca Police Department and Sheriff Bobbie Vickery of the Calhoun County Sheriff's Department. Both men recently assumed their current positions.

Colin gave us a bit of his background and spoke about his goals for the police force going forward. Specifically he wants the officers to be more involved with the community on a social level, and mentioned the no shave November contest the guys held.

Bobbie talked about his goals for the department and how things have been restructured since he took office. He is trying to find ways to grow his patrol force, and echoed Colin's goal to have officers more involved in the community. Both men also expressed a want for the two forces to work together on multiple projects in the future.

Rotarian of the Week Patrick Franklin had as his guest Janice Holladay, President of the Calhoun County Humane Society Board of Directors. Janice spoke of the good work of many volunteers that care for and find homes for many dogs and cats that would otherwise be put down. She spoke of a new facility to be built soon, but that monetary donations are still needed.

Rotarian of the Week Marilyn Horst had as her guest Cole Brady, the founder of CoWatt Energy. Cole gave us the history of CoWatt, and the early challenges they faced. Their early concerns lead to the development of the PowerFunnel, which simplified the installation of solar arrays.

Rotarian of Week Jim Faulkner had as his guest Wendy Cabrera from the Calhoun County Community Ministries. Currently the organization is in serious need of donations of both food items and funds. Recently the organization has been doing a larger amount of rent and utility assistance than they have in the past and this has depleted their funds.

Rotarian Mike Rivet stood in for Mike Elgin to introduce our guest Carolyn Adrian from United Way of Calhoun County. She gave us the history of United Way nationally, and in Calhoun County. The United Way helps to support the Calhoun County Community Ministries, Senior Citizens Association, YMCA, and many other great organizations. 

Their 2016-17 fundraising goal is $300,000. You can find more information on their website at unitedwaybythebay.org.

Rotarian of the Week Chad Dowell had as his guest Ellison Crider, the Rotary Foundation Committee Chair for District 5930. He spoke about what the Rotary Foundation is, it's history, and some of the projects it funds. Polio Plus, Annual Fund, and Endowment Fund are the three places donations go when given to the Foundation. Money brought in goes to support our districts through regional projects, and grants given internationally.

Rotarian of the Week Sam Diesel had as his guest Carissa Wilhelm of the Healthy South Texas Program. She told us about the programs goals and outreach efforts. Some of the projects include Walk Across Texas, HST Youth Ambassadors, Dinner Tonight Cooking School, Master Wellness Training, and a diabetes expo coming up in Port Lavaca on October 31st.

Rotarian of the Week Terry Cullen had as his guest Joanne Settles of Polio Plus. She gave us the history of Rotary's battle against Polio world wide and an update on how Rotary continues to battle the disease.

Currently there are only three countries remaining that have new cases of Polio in the last year.

Rotarian of the Week Dr. James Cowley had as his guest Nicole Nguyen, CCISD Child Nutrition Department General Manager. She spoke about the food service at the schools in our county. Sodexo is in its first year supplying food service to Calhoun County schools.

Rotarian of the Week Russell Cain had as his guest Dr. Gus Gross. Dr. Gross spoke to us about his specialty, venomous snake bites. He shared with us information on the most common snakes and causes of bites, as well as the types of treatments they require.

Rotarian of the Week Danny Cano had as his speaker Rotarian Chad Odom. Chad gave us an overview of the Port Lavaca Comprehensive Plan. The plan is a 10-20 year vision of what the city is aiming for. The plan is currently in phase two. Phase one was community feedback on what was wanted. The current phase is planning how the end goals can be achieved.

Rotarian of the Week Randy Smith had as his guest Davis Ford. Davis is an environmental engineer and an adjunct professor at the University of Texas. He spoke about his book, "The Second World War: Through Younger and Older Eyes." He gave the story of how he came about the people interviewed through his travels over the decades. He showed pictures from some of the locations he visited and people he spoke with.

Rotarian of the Week, Terry Bull was unable to attend, so Mike Rivet introduced our guests Tania French and Tina Crow. They informed us of upcoming events in Port Lavaca including Flip-flop Fest and Market Days at its new location at Lighthouse Beach. We were also given information on the chamber's upcoming Customer Service 101 seminar and the upcoming active shooter seminar and time management seminar, as well as other chamber events. 

We were also introduced to the brand new app, Discover Port Lavaca (available on iOS and Android). The app is a one stop location for information about the city, county, their management, upcoming events, and much more. The app is still in beta, so feedback is appreciated.

Rotarian of the Week, Randy Boyd, was unable to attend, so Derek introduced Charles Hausmann, port director. He updated us on traffic changes in the port in the last year, changes to the area, and proposed changes we can look forward to in the coming years.

Rotarian of the Week, Bob Bonar, had as his guest Coach Richard Whitaker. Coach updated us on new coaches to Calhoun County High School. He also reflected on last season and gave us information on what to expect this season, including the addition of the Victoria schools to our competition.

Rotary International South Texas District 5930 Governor Debbie High was the guest speaker of Rotarian of the Week Betty Birdwell. 



President Derek Schmidt received from District Governor High a special banner themed "Flying HIGH with Rotary", which is this year's District 5930 slogan.




The Port Lavaca Rotary Club donated $1,000.00 to MD Anderson Research. IBC bank is currently implementing a special matching campaign which means IBC bank will add $1,000.00 to the Club's $1,000.0 and IBC's investment group will add another $1,000.00 for a total donation of $3,000.00 for cancer research. The special matching campaign ends August 31, 2016. Rotary President Derek Schmidt presented Rotary's donation to Harry Frankson.

Samantha Bell was Rotarian of the week. Her guest speaker was Shari Ramirez-MacKay, State Coordinator for the Regional Disaster Finance Program with the Texas Department of Public Safety. Part of her role is ensuring local governments can financially recover from a disaster.

The Rotary Club of Port Lavaca swore in Marty Shofner as our newest member. He was given the classification of Real Estate Sales.


Rotarian of the week Jody Weaver had as her guest Wendy Cabrera from the Calhoun County Community Ministries. She spoke about the services they provide which include assistance with rent, utilities, medication, and food. Currently the food pantry is low on supplies and Rotarian were asked to consider donating food items. The Rotary Club of Port Lavaca presented Wendy with a $1,000 check for the Community Ministries, which was matched by an individual Rotarian as well.

Rotarian Sam Bell introduced guest Doug Reed on behalf of Jim Ward. Doug is the owner of Lavaca Bluffs Vineyard and Winery. He gave updates on the recently opened tasting room at the vineyard and new wines that have been released since he spoke to us before.

The Noon Day Port Lavaca Rotary Club recognized its May 2016 Students of the Month during its regular weekly meeting on Thursday, May 26th, 2016. CHS’s Valedictorian Kevin Chen and Salutatorian  Jessie Sun were awarded certificates recognizing them as Port Lavaca Rotary’s Students of the Month. CHS Principal Nicole Amason was their sponsor.


The Port Lavaca Noon Day Rotary Club recognized its 2016 Memorial Medical Center’s Nurses of the Year during their 5-26-2016 meeting. Recognition was given to Donn Stringo, RN, Director of Inpatient Services; Monica Carr, LVN, OB Department; and Maria Longoria, LVN, Med/Surg Department.

Rotarian of the Week, Jim Story had as his guest Diana Freeman, the Career and Technology Education Director at Calhoun County Independent School District. She updated us on the CTE program and spoke on the Calhoun County Education Foundation.

Rotarian of the Week, Jesse Rodriguez had as his guest Henry Guajardo, the Executive Director of the Golden Crescent Workforce Development Board. Henry gave information on area unemployment rates before talking about the Workforce Development Board. He spoke on Solutions offered by the organization which included child care, assistance to non-custodial parents, veterans services, and general employment services, among many other projects.

Paul Wachtendorf brought Tom Plumb from Hands to Honduras to give a quick information session about a water project our Rotary club will be financially assisting.


Rotarian of the Week was Melissa Sterling who had as her guest Dr. Vic Morgan, President of the University of Houston - Victoria. He opened with a number of jokes before moving on to updating us on the university. Specifically he focused on the move of classes from Sugar Land to Katy, new staff positions to the Victoria campus, and new programs coming to the school, including the return of a nursing program.

Rotarian of the week Derek Schmidt had as his guest Kathleen Card of Hospice of South Texas. He told us about his own experience working with a hospice agency for a family member before turning the presentation over to her. Kathleen spoke about what hospice, or palliative care is, and how Hospice of South Texas was founded. She talked on her own history with the organization, and about the future, specifically the new in-patient facility that will be opening in Victoria late this summer, or early this fall.

We started this week off with our monthly student recognitions. Mike McGuire introduced Lauree Aschen, Director of Choral Activities, to present awards to both Blaine Schmidt and Shaughnessy Howell. Both students are active in choir and many other organizations.



The Rotarian of the Week was Sara Rodriguez who had as her guests Andrea and Padraic O'Neil, owners and brewers of O'Neil & Sons Brewing Company. They spoke about the process of founding a brewery and invited all Rotarians to visit their brewery and tasting room, located in Port Lavaca.

Local students participated in the Rotary Area 1, 4-Way Speech Contest on March 23, 2016. The winner of the contest will move on to compete in the Rotary District Contest in Corpus Christi. 

The purpose of the contest is to help youth, Rotarians, and the community to more completely understand, encourage, and foster the principles of Rotary and the objective of "Service above self."

Each speech must apply the 4-Way Test to everyday relationships with people: 1) Is is the TRUTH? 2) Is is FAIR to all concerned? 3) Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4) Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? The speech cannot be less than 5 minutes, or more than 7 minutes in length.

It was a busy meeting of the Port Lavaca Noon Day Rotary Club. We began with the presentation of Sheriff Deputy of the Year. The award was given to Lt. Robert Hinojosa by Michele Morales. Sheriff George Aleman, Captain Rusty Henderson, and Chief Deputy Bryon Hall were also present to assist with the presentation.


We then inducted two new members into our group; Chad Dowell was sponsored by Chad Odom and awarded classification of Pest Control Services. Robert Smith was sponsored by Jim Ward (Mike Rivet representing) and awarded classification of Retail management.



The Rotarian of the Week was Mike Rivet who had as his guest Ginny Stafford, CEO of Mid-Coast Family Services. She spoke about the assistance Mid-Coast gives to homeless in our region and showed a video about a woman who went from the streets of Victoria to her own apartment through the intervention of multiple charitable organizations.

The Rotarian of the Week was Rhonda Nielsen who had as her guest Dr. James Cowley of the Calhoun County School District. He spoke about the newly revitalized Calhoun County Education Foundation and the impact a Promise Fund can have on a community. He invited all Rotarians to attend an information lunch presented by Claiborne Deming on March 9th, to learn more about the El Dorado, AR Promise Fund.

Mike McGuire presented the boy and girl of the month, Patrick Day and Elaina Cuellar. They both represent the CHS Student Council and attended with the Student Council Sponsor Jennifer Teehan.



Our annual monetary donation was made to the Calhoun County Library. The presentation was made by 
Pam Lambden to Neomi Cruz and Marsha Buller.



The Rotarian of the Week was Michele Morales who had as her guests Agent Joe Morales and Agent IV Ryan Gregory of the Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission. They spoke about covering 8 counties and the various types of work they do. They are involved in everything from minor stings, undercover operations, source investigation, and they offer free education to retailers, schools, and other law enforcement entities.

SGT. Detective Collin Rangnow was recognized as the 2016 Officer of the Year by the Noon Day Port Lavaca Rotary Club. The award was presented by Chief James Martinez and Michele Morales.



The CHS Jazz Ensemble, directed by Doug Hamelwright, entertained our club with their performance of some well known and loved songs as the guest of Rotarian of the Week Mike McGuire for the 2-18-2016 meeting of the Noon Day Port Lavaca Rotary Club.

Samantha Bell, Admission Director of Port Lavaca Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, was the guest of Rotarian of the Week Dr. Tim McFarland for the 2-11-2016 meeting of the Noon Day Port Lavaca Rotary Club. She spoke about the 10 early warning signs of Alzheimer's Disease. Dr. McFarland also spoke about healthy eating tips.

Carolyn Adrian, Executive Director of the Calhoun County United Way, was the guest of Rotarian of the Week James Martinez for the 1-28-2016 meeting of the Noon Day Port Lavaca Rotary Club. She spoke about what entities the United Way funds in Calhoun County and informed us about the fundraising goal for 2016. She was presented with the Rotary's annual donation to the United Way.

Byron Smith, Building Official with the City of Port Lavaca, was the guest of Rotarian of the Week Candace Klein for the 1-21-2016 meeting of the Noon Day Port Lavaca Rotary Club. Mr. Smith is licensed as a Texas code enforcement officer, certified floodplain manager, Texas master electrician, Texas plumbing inspector, Texas registered accessibility specialist, Texas fire inspector. He also holds 17 International Code Council certifications (building codes) including Master Code.

Rotarian of the week was Danny Cano.  Danny’s program presenter was Victoria County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Roy Boyd. Chief Deputy Boyd presented information regarding U.S. border security and human trafficking and highlighted some of the actions being taken by Texas local and State law enforcement agencies.

Rotarian of the week was Kench Connally.  Kench’s program presenter was Bill Harvey.  Bill and Dean Johnstone recently completed a wildlife-outdoor photograph contest called Wildlife in Focus.  Contestants from the coastal counties of Jackson to the Rio Grande Valley participated in this year’s contest. Bill presented a slide show of the 100 images he and Dean submitted.  Together they captured over 42,000 images during the contest period, which ran from February thru June this year.

Laurel Cahill was Rotarian of the Week.  She introduced her program speaker, Melissa Dixon, Executive Director of the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Golden Crescent.  Melissa and Betty Jo presented details regarding the various programs offered and the current building program underway for their new location in Victoria. The museum serves the following eleven counties: Victoria, Calhoun, Jackson, Lavaca, Dewitt, Bee, Refugio, Goliad, Gonzales, Karnes and Wharton. The Museum’s mission is to “Foster lifelong learning for children and families through dynamic educational experiences.” Their vision is to “Become a destination that ignites and cultivates the potential of children through creativity, discovery and development.” Details of their work and future growth can be found on their website at CDMGOLDENCRESCENT.COM .

Rotarian of the Week was Raymond Butler.  Raymond's program presenter was Jesse Hubbell, Chief Appraiser, Calhoun County Appraisal District.  Jesse gave a very informative talk about the functions of the County Appraisal Office including all aspects of how property taxes are determined and the communications with constituents.   He encouraged everyone to vote this November on a State ballot initiative that will increase the homestead exemption allowance and reduce the taxes of all Texas property owners.
