ESL 911, Reading/Listening-Speaking I: The materials I have selected for this class center around the novel choice, Seedfolks, which I recommended for adoption during the recent curriculum changes. I developed a workbook designed to give students a foundation in vocabulary, a comprehension guide, an opportunity to select their own vocabulary words to learn, and a journal format that encourages the students to make personal connections to the text. (I based my workbook design on The Journal of Wong Ming-Chung: Teaching Reading Comprehension to Adult ESL Learners Using Culturally Relevant, Young-Adult Literature by Marguerite Conrad and Miriam Queen, published in The CATESOL Journal, Vol. 20, Number 1, 2008.) I also developed digital materials to support their reading experiences with the text: Jing audio of the text and Google forms/spreadsheet for a found poem based on the work.
