Audrey Critchard has kindly passed on the sad news that SCARA member John Roberts passed away on 18 December 2025.
John will be remembered by many. He was in ANZ Trade in Beagle House before moving to Business Development Department in the late 1980s. From then until the Maersk takeover he continued to work for the senior leadership team and the trade divisions, carrying out research and other business development-type projects.
Given his extensive knowledge of the company's trade operations and the company history, John was an obvious candidate to be a major contributor to British Box Business: The History of OCL, edited by Alan Bott and published by SCARA in 2009. Four chapters in the book bear his name:
(6) Far East Trade,
(10) OC(P)L and the Australia/New Zealand-Asia Trades,
(11) Middle East, India and East Africa Trades, and
(14) OCL: 1986-2005.
John was a regular attendee at our annual SCARA reunion lunches so was much missed when, due to illness, he had to drop out at the last minute for the gathering last November.
John's funeral is scheduled to take place on Thursday 22 January at 11am at:
42 High Street
Chislehurst
Kent
BR7 5AQ
The wake will then be at:
Garden Road
