First Liverpool Reunion

posted 30 Jul 2015, 13:01 by Mike Chapman   [ updated 30 Jul 2015, 13:10 ]

The reunion did in fact take place at long last!

Eighteen of us attended at the William Gladstone in Liverpool on Saturday 18 April 2015.  We had apologies from a further twenty who were either on holiday or already had plans for that day. Not a bad turnout for our first attempt and considering we were unable to contact some of our ex colleagues and Everton were playing at home! That is our first lesson learnt to ensure no football matches are being played on the day for future reunions!

Eileen Keogh, Linda Coyle, Caroline Heaps)

It was lovely to see everyone and catch up on old times. Mike Royden came armed with a folder full of photos from some of the OCL GALA WEEKENDS and we had some fun trying to get our brains into gear putting the names to the faces and the mullet hairdos! I didn’t even recognise myself!

(Dave Stirrup, Mike Royden, Ted Bouvier, Dave
Thompson, Rod Sutton &  Owen McCann)

We all agreed it was a great afternoon and are looking forward to the next one in the not too distant future.

The Annual Reunion for Birmingham was held on Saturday 8th November 2014 – despite the horrendous weather in the morning we had a good number of people turn up (30) and several first timers. The was a great success (1pm until 11pm!!!) and it was good to catch up with people from the past.

2014 Tokyo Reunion

posted 29 Nov 2014, 13:36 by Mike Chapman   [ updated 29 Nov 2014, 13:42 ]

November 2014 saw a long-wished reunion in Tokyo: Geoff Bolton, OCL/P&OCL veteran of thirty years from the 1967 startup of the OCAL head office in Sydney, moved to Japan soon after the first ‘Encounter Bay’ voyage arrival from Europe - for a 3-year secondment to the Swire Shipping Tokyo office during 1970-73.  Geoff was systems project manager alongside local Swire Systems department manager Teru Noma for the initial AJCL (Australia-Japan Container Line) trade to Australia from 1970, followed two years later by the OCL Europe-Japan trade.
An additional New Zealand service by CSCS (Crusader Swire Container Service) was also supported by this department in later years.

After his later return to OCAL Sydney in 1973 Geoff became commercial manager for the AJCL trade for six years, then later becoming Australian Container Manager for a similar term.

After a 41-year break, during which Geoff and Teru had kept in contact, Geoff decided this year to revisit Japan for a reunion with former workmates: though the Swire Shipping agency and their department had moved on through mergers and closures, Teru Noma in recent years convened an annual Systems staff reunion which this year Geoff was able to join – for a hectic but enjoyable one-week visit.

Another Tokyo reunion earlier that week also gave Geoff the opportunity to renew meetings  with other Swire ‘old boys/girls’ from shipping and other sections with whom he had worked or known in AJCL trade. Geoff travelled to Yokohama later that week for lunch with Y.(“Harry”) Tanaka who as AJCL trade manager also often visited Australia.

Note - Apart from the initial important roles of Swire Systems EDP team for the OCL/P&OCL Japan-based container services from Tokyo, their staff development and skilling continued, with some later spending time working overseas to assist other OCL/P&OCL company branches by reinforcing their local EDP team assets: as examples Takumi Watabe worked at different times in the group’s EDP units in Sydney, Wellington, and London … Mariko Kojima in the Wellington branch, and absent members Taeko Suzuki and Tsubuku who also worked in OCL London).

Above photo taken at the “Olive” café - Back row – Takumi Watabe, Teru Noma, Geoff Bolton, Yurie Watanabe, Yamane; front row – Mariko Kojima, Mori, Hiromi Makita, Yukiko ONO (now ‘Olive’ cafe venue owner).  Photo excludes photographer Toshi Katsura, and Kimiko Hoshino who had to leave earlier.

Birmingham reunion 2010

posted 8 Mar 2011, 13:15 by Mike Chapman   [ updated 9 Mar 2011, 00:23 ]

Many thanks to Craig Bowen for the report on the annual Birmingham office reunion...

The seventh Birmingham reunion took place in November of last year.  The first event had been organised by Rob Mills from the Birmingham Perry Barr office, with "invites" given out just before the office closed in late 2003.

The event is always timed to take place on the 2nd Saturday in November starting at 1pm.  The location is The Square Peg Bar in Birmingham City Centre and a good time is had by all.

The numbers and attendees have varied each year depending on what people are doing. We usually stay in the bar until say 7/8pm 'ish and then usually a few of us go for a meal.

The picture above right shows Julie Dale, Pat Bradbury and Veronica Campion.  In the picture below left is Craig Bowen with Beryl Whittle (switchboard).

Rotterdam reunion 2010

posted 22 Jan 2011, 11:04 by Mike Chapman   [ updated 8 Mar 2011, 12:59 ]

The PONLHeritage group have received the following report and a selection of photographs on the annual Christmas reunion for former staff in Rotterdam.

Our sincere thanks to Anné Padmos, Petra Veltman & Frans Tutuhatunewa (pictured right) for sending this on so it can be shared with ex-colleagues worldwide
_________

The happening of the year used to be the PONL Xmas drink that was organized by the PONL social club of the Rotterdam office. The Xmas drink was organized not only for the staff in the Willemswerf, but also for the Amsterdam and Belgium offices and always attracted a huge crowed for drinks, dinner and party. The setting was usually Plan-C of Cambrinus at the ‘oude haven’ (old port) in Rotterdam.

Since the Maersk take-over, some colleagues, who had meantime continued their careers elsewhere, used to regularly meet for lunch. It was during one of these lunches in 2007 that it was suggested to organize a similar Xmas drink for the ex-PONL Rotterdam crew. On November 25th 2010 the ex-PONL Xmas drink was organized for the third consecutive time.

Again a huge crowd of over a 100 paid a visit to Cambrinus to meet (former) colleagues. Of course there was talk about the old days, but also about the new challenges people faced. The event is also used as a networking site to seek new opportunities.
And the rumble continued to late at night…

We are looking forward to organizing the ex-PONL Xmas drink this year and hope for an even higher turn-up in 2011.
