Please look below for a list of weekly assignments.  Also, please realize that what you see is "the plan" of what we will do for the week, and sometimes in the classroom (just as in real life), we wind up having to tweak things a bit.

Week of 05/06 - 05/10

The schedule for this week will be:  Testing Blue, Testing Green, Testing Blue, Testing Green, and Charger.

Progress Reports for the 6th Six Weeks will go home this Monday 05/06!

IRP #5:  IRP #5 Part 2 will be due Monday, 05/13, and due to the large amount of testing already taking place in May, we will not have an IRP #5 Test.  :-)

Stanford Testing - Students will be in testing mode each day until about 11:30 am.  As a result of shortened classes for testing, you may notice that our English schedule looks a little "thin" this week.

This week in English, we will:

  • Work On, Check, & Collect a Stanford Spelling & Language Practice Packet (05/06-05/07).
  • Work on 12 Angry Men Act 3 Open-Ended Responses (05/06-05/07).
  • Begin Reading & Listening to "The Monkey's Paw" by W.W. Jacobs on pgs. 374-384 in the Red Literature Book (05/08-05/09).
  • Finish Reading & Listening to "The Monkey's Paw" by W.W. Jacobs on pgs. 374-384 in the Red Literature Book (05/10).
  • Work on "The Monkey's Paw" Reading Comprehension Questions (05/10).
  • Work on "The Monkey's Paw" Crossword Puzzle (05/10).

Week of 04/29 - 05/03

IRP #5:  IRP #5 Part 2 will be due Monday, 05/13, and due to the large amount of testing already taking place in May, we will not have an IRP #5 Test.  :-)

Stanford Testing - This is just a heads up that Stanford Testing will take place Monday, 05/06 - Thursday, 05/09. I don't know the exact Testing Bell Schedule for each day yet, but will send it out when I get it.  In the mean-time, please be aware of these dates when scheduling doctors appointments and such.  We really need all students to be present at school for testing.

This week in English, we will:

  • Take a Stanford Practice Test (04/29-04/30).
  • Share & Collect 12 Angry Men Act 2 Open-Ended Responses (04/29-04/30).
  • Cast Parts & Read/Act Out 12 Angry Men Act 3 (04/29-04/30).
  • Participate in a Peer Critique/Discussion Session (04/29-04/30).
  • Work on a 12 Angry Men Act 3 Convincing Evidence Activity (05/01-05/02).
  • Review & Discuss the Stanford Practice Test from Monday & Tuesday (05/01-05/02).
  • Work On, Check, & Collect Stanford Vocabulary Practice Activities:  #1) Unit 1A & 1B Vocab. Practice, and #2) Unit 1 Vocab. Practice Test (05/01-05/02).

Week of 04/22 - 04/26

The schedule for this week will be:  Charger, Testing Green, Testing Blue, Testing Green, and Blue.

IRP #5:  IRP #5 Part 1 will be due Monday, 04/22, and I will announce the date for IRP #5 Part 2 and the IRP #5 Test sometime soon.  I know it will be sometime in May, but May is so full of testing that I need to look carefully at the calendar before scheduling this deadline.

8th Grade Reading STAAR - Yeah!!!  It's done!!!  As soon as the school receives scores back, I will make sure to let all of the students know how they did.  :-)

This week in English, we will:

  • Assign Parts for 12 Angry Men Act 2 (04/22).
  • Begin Reading/Acting Out 12 Angry Men Act 2 (04/22).
  • Participate in a Peer Critique/Discussion Session (04/22).
  • Pass Back Graded Papers (04/23-04/24) 15 minute classes due to STAAR.
  • Watch a BrainPop Review Video on Test-Taking Strategies (04/23-04/24) 15 minute classes due to STAAR.
  • Finish Reading/Acting Out 12 Angry Men Act 2 if not done yet (04/25-04/26).
  • Participate in a Peer Critique/Discussion Session (04/25-04/26).
  • Work on a 12 Angry Men Act 2 Reaching Conclusions Activity (04/25-04/26).

Report Cards for the 5th Six Weeks will go home this Friday, April 19th!

IRP #4:  Some students did not finish their IRP #4 Test during English class.  Please check with your students, and remind them to see me during TEAM Time or after school if they did not finish their test.

Week of 04/08 - 04/12

The schedule for this week will be:  Blue, Green, Blue, Green, and Charger.

The last day of the 5th Six Weeks is this Friday, 04/12!  This is also the last day for students to make up any missing English work.  I will be available after school this week on Monday, Thursday, and Friday, for students who need to make up work, and during TEAM Time.  Please let me know in advance if your students plan to stay after.

IRP #4:  Please make sure your students are reading their Biographies or Autobiographies.  IRP #4 Part 2 Questions (and the IRP #4 Test ) are this Monday 04/08 & Tuesday 04/09.  Please remind your students to bring their books, as the test is open-book!

IRP #5:  Our 5th & final IRP of the year will be Free Choice, meaning that students may choose any book they want, provided that they haven't read it before, that it is of appropriate length and reading level, and that they have parental permission to read it.  IRP #5 Slips are due this Friday, 04/12, and IRP #5 Part 1 will be due Monday, 04/22.

IRP #4:  Please make sure your students are reading their Biographies or Autobiographies.  IRP #4 Part 2 Questions (and the IRP #4 Test ) will be moved to Monday 04/08 & Tuesday 04/09, after the 8th Grade Reading STAAR.

IRP #5:  Our 5th & final IRP of the year will be Free Choice, meaning that students may choose any book they want, provided that they haven't read it before, that it is of appropriate length and reading level, and that they have parental permission to read it.  Students will receive their IRP #5 Parent Approval Forms this Monday, 04/01.  Signed IRP #5 Slips will be due on Friday, 04/12, and IRP #5 Part 1 will be due Monday, 04/22.

8th Grade Reading STAAR - The 8th Grade Reading STAAR will be this Wednesday, April 3rd!  Please make sure your students get plenty of sleep the night before the test, and that they eat a good breakfast the morning of the test.  They may also bring snacks during testing, provided they meet the guidelines sent home in our testing email, and posted on our cluster site.

This week in English, we will:

  • Receive the IRP #5 Free Choice Book Slip (04/01).
  • Review Testing Success Reminders (04/01).
  • Watch the School House Rock Video:  Unpack Your Adjectives (04/01).
  • Watch a BrainPop Video on Adjectives (04/01).
  • Check & Collect Grammar Worksheet pgs. 73-74 - Adjectives (04/01).
  • Work On, Check, & Collect Grammar Worksheet pg. 77 (04/01).
  • Introduce the Drama Genre (04/02-04/04).
  • Watch part of the Discovery Education Video - America in the 20th Century:  The Post-War Years to build background knowledge for reading 12 Angry Men (04/02-04/04).

8th Grade Reading STAAR - The 8th Grade Reading STAAR will be on Wednesday, April 3rd!  For the next two weeks, I will be working closely with your students to review their previous STAAR performance, set goals for this year's STAAR Reading Test, and review any STAAR skills with which your students are struggling.  Passing the 8th Grade Reading STAAR is necessary for promotion to the 9th grade.

This week in English, we will:

  • Finish Reviewing the STAAR Diagnostic with TEA Released STAAR Items (03/25-03/26).
  • Watch a BrainPop Review Video over Civil War Causes to build historical background information for reading (03/25-03/26).
  • Work on, Review, & Collect Practice STAAR Assessment #10 over a Civil-War Themed Drama (03/25-03/26).
  • Watch BrainPop Review Videos over the Civil War & Abraham Lincoln to build historical background information for reading (03/27-03/28).
  • Work on, Review, & Collect Practice STAAR Assessment #11 over Lincoln at Gettysburg (03/27-03/28).

Daniel's Story - We are currently conducting our in-class Holocaust novel study of Daniel's Story by Carol Matas.  We will read the novel in class, NOT for homework, as I only have a class set of books.  Any students absent while we are reading the novel will need to make arrangements with me to get caught up during TEAM Time, during a Study Lab, or after school.

This week in English, we will:

  • Collect the IRP #4 Part 1 Questions (03/04 & 03/05).
  • Collect the Daniel's Story Part 3 Questions (03/04 & 03/05).
  • Review, Check, & Collect the Daniel's Story Part 3 Vocabulary Activity (03/04 & 03/05).
  • Work on Daniel's Story Part 4 Questions (03/04 & 03/05).
  • Taka a Daniel's Story TEST.  The test is 30 questions, multiple-choice, & open-book (03/06 & 03/07).
