Better Tie Dyed T-Shirts

Create your own Tie Dyed T-Shirts using Procion MX Dye

From the editors of Pohick.blogspot.com

Last week we created T-Shirts using Rit Dye Powder.  This week we decided to try a different dye technique using procion mx dye which we purchased online from Dick Blick Art Supplies.  The shirts turned out great and this technique is a lot easier than the boiling vats of dye we used last week with the RIT Dye Powder.

Here's the steps we used to create these shirts.

1.  Gather the material.

  • Plastic Table Cloth (That you never plan to use for food again)
  • Measuring spoons and cup (That you never plan to use for food again)
  • Protective Mask
  • Protective Gloves
  • Gallon Size Zip Lock Bags
  • Large Bucket or Tub
  • Squeeze Bottles (Blick Art Supplies)
  • Procion MX Dye (Blick Art Supplies)
  • Soda Ash (Blick Art Supplies)
  • Urea (Blick Art Supplies)
  • String or Rubber Bands
  • All Cotton T-Shirts

 2. Prepare the Shirts (Caution - Use protective mask, protective gloves and protective mask when working with the chemicals and dyes!)

3. Prepare the Dye (Caution - Use protective mask, protective gloves and protective mask when working with the chemicals and dyes!)

  • Fill the squeeze bottles almost to the top with water
  • Add 1 tablespoon of Urea
  • Add 2 tablespoons of Procion MX Dye
  • Shake Well

4. Apply the Dye

  • For these shirts, we are using a three color spiral design.  Imagine the shirt is a pie and divide the pie in 6 pieces.
  • Dye both the front and the back of the shirt.
  • Work the tip of the squeeze bottle between the folds of the shirt.

5. Place the dyed shirt into a zip lock bag.

  •  Place the dyed shirt in a zip lock bag for at least 24 hours.
  • This will allow the reactive dye to bind with the fibers in the shirt.

 6. Finish the Shirts

  • Remove the shirts from the zip lock bags.
  • Remove the strings or rubber bands.
  • Wash the shirts to remove any excess dye.  Start with cold water and gradually warm.
  • Once the water from the shirts runs clear you should wash the shirts in a washing machine using laundry detergent.
  • The shirts are now complete.  Enjoy.
