Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation

Welcome to the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR), Christian Medical College, Vellore. The department is a large interdisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech therapists, social workers, psychologist, prosthetists and orthotists. This team works together in maximizing the health and functional abilities of people with disabilities. 

The department was inaugurated in 1963 by the then President of India Dr. S. Radhakrishnan. Dr. Mary Verghese was in-charge of the department at that time. The Rehabilitation Institute was dedicated in 1966 by the then Union Minister for Health Dr. Sushila Nayyar. 

This department has recently been designated as a World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Development of Rehabilitation Technology, Capacity Building and Disability Prevention

The outpatient facility, interdisciplinary clinics, acute care in-patient wards, electrodiagnostic services are in the CMC hospital campus at Thottapalayam, Vellore. The in-patient wards of the rehabilitation institute, movement analysis lab, urodynamics lab, diagnostic ultrasonography services, and spinal cord regeneration research laboratory are in the college campus at Bagayam, Vellore. 


Patient Services

The department of PMR functions as two units, providing outpatient and inpatient services for persons with physical/neurological impairments due to conditions such as 

  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Brain Injury due to trauma and other causes
  • Stroke 
  • Developmental disorders such as cerebral palsy, spinal dysraphism
  • Amputations of the extremities
  • Rheumatological conditions
  • Haemophilia
  • Neuromuscular disorders
  • Chronic pain

Inpatient services

With about  30 beds in the CMC hospital wards and 83 beds in the Rehabilitation Institute, the department of PMR provides inpatient rehabilitation services to about 900 persons with physical impairments every year.  Among these, the common medical conditions necessitating inpatient rehabilitation are Spinal Cord Injury, Brain Injury, Stroke and Cerebral Palsy.

  • Upper tract changes in traumatic spinal cord injury
  • Subclinical ulnar nerve palsy in persons with hemophilia
  • Prognostication of severe traumatic brain injury by SSEP
  • Virtual reality in balance training of children with cerebral palsy
  • Role of biomarkers in early detection of heterotopic ossification following spinal cord injury
  • Assistive technology with sensor based system to improve hand functions following stroke
  • Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation for gait training in persons with unilateral transtibial amputation

Community Based Rehabilitation

The Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) program was initiated along with the department of Low Cost Effective Care Unit in 2002, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO). The aim of the project was to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities, their families and communities in the urban economically disadvantaged areas of Vellore. Volunteers from the community were trained using WHO modules to identify persons with disability and institute appropriate intervention using locally available resources.
