Ancient Philosophy

Research

I work primarily in ancient moral philosophy.  My research concerns how ancient philosophers understood the relationship between the individual and common good.  I am particularly interested in Plato and Socrates' claim that philosophy makes one not only a better human being but also a better friend, family member, and citizen.  And I am interested in a similar question in Aristotle's work, how being virtuous can at once make one the best person and the best sort of friend and citizen.  So far I have focused on the Plato's Lysis and Arisotle's Nicomachean Ethics but I am expanding the scope of my work to include Plato's Apology, Gorgias, Republic, Aristotle's Politics, and Cicero's De Amicitia.
