Tryouts-Summer

Tryouts for Pius' Jr Legion team (Sandhills Publishing) and the Reserve team (Driven Academy) will be Thursday May 10th, 2018

Tryouts will be at Pius starting at 4pm.  Tryouts should be completed around 6.

Tryouts for our Junior Legion Baseball team (Sandhills Publishing) and for our Reserve team (Driven Academy) are held approximately the third Saturday in May. This info will be updated when a date/time is confirmed. Rosters are posted on the Announcements page.
Please read or reread the tryout information piece from the spring in regards to what the coaching staff is looking for in the players they keep.

We do not have tryouts for our Senior Legion team (Union Bank). That roster is filled with the best available players, freshman-senior, based on what is best for them and our program as well as their overall performance thus far in our program. Those players will be notified prior to the tryouts for the other two teams mentioned. The roster for Sandhills Publishing will be filled with the best available players (incoming freshman-sophomores), based on what is best for them and our program, their overall performance thus far in our program, and their performance during tryouts. The roster for Driven Academy will be filled with the best left available incoming freshman and freshman. Again, based on what is best for them and our program, their overall performance thus far, and their performance during tryouts.

Juniors
Any junior who asks to be released from the Pius X program after having secured a spot on the Pius X summer team may do so at the expense of all but forfeiting their spot within the Pius X Baseball program. This does not mean someone cannot try out their senior year, but does mean that the program will be forced to move forward after a player voluntarily chooses to leave. And since we will have been forced to move forward without them in our program, we will have learned to do without them. We believe it is a privilege to be part of the Pius X program and many young men have worked and invested to build the program to what it is. Many of those players paid dues as role players and put the overall success of the program above their own interests. Were we to grant players the ability to voluntarily quit the program and return, we believe this to be disrespectful and adverse to the development of those who earn spots, accept their roles, and choose to stay. If a spot is not available for them, they will be given a release if they ask and will have an equal chance as any player to make the team the following spring.

Seniors
Seniors who play for the Pius X spring team will not be granted a release from the Pius X summer team if a spot is available to them. If a spot is not available on the summer varsity team, a release will be granted for those who ask. Seniors are given the freedom to choose to play or not play their senior summer, but they may not choose to play for a different team/program. We believe it is a privilege to be part of the Pius X program and many young men have worked and invested to build the program to what it is. Allowing seniors the freedom to leave to play for another team/program simply opens a door to several issues of logistics and stability that we do not believe the program need go down. No athlete is obligated to try out for baseball. Our athletes chose to play baseball for Pius X, and in doing so, are expected to honor that commitment, barring any extenuating circumstances of health or well-being) through their senior year if they wish to play baseball in the summer following graduation.

Freshman and Sophomores
Any freshman or sophomore who asks to be released from the Pius X program, either after having secured a summer roster spot or prior to tryouts, may do so at the expense of all but forfeiting their spot within the Pius X Baseball program. This does not mean someone cannot try out the following year, but does mean that the program will be forced to move forward after a player voluntarily chooses to leave.

Tryouts and Releases
A player can be given a release from playing for a Pius X affiliated summer team if they did not secure a roster spot on a Pius X team through performance during either the spring season or summer tryouts. A student that was part of a Pius X spring team, but did not earn a spot on a Pius X summer team can be given a release to play for a school that does not compete in the same spring enrollment classification as Pius X.

If a release is given to a player who either chose not try out for baseball at Pius X in the spring or summer or was released/removed from the Pius X program for character issues, the released player cannot play for any another Lincoln school’s affiliated summer team in any classification.
