We are happy you have chosen to come out for baseball here at Pius X. You will have the opportunity to win yourself a spot
on either the Varsity or Junior Varsity teams. If a player makes the Pius X baseball team it is because the coaches feel that player will
help the team, period. This might be on either the JV or Varsity, or both (swing player). Competition amongst the team for starting
spots is one of the things that can best make the team better!!! Therefore, coaches take into consideration a number of criteria when
determining starting positions for either JV or Varsity. Obviously talent/ability are considered. However, talent is not the sole
determining factor of making the team or playing time!!! Other things that are considered and are equally important in our eyes are:
attitude, level of work, conduct on and off the field, and overall character just to name a few. Players that grade out the highest in all
of these categories will earn a spot on the team and perhaps ultimately Varsity. Please understand that being older doesn’t mean being
better, and doesn’t entitle you to a starting position. The same thing can be said for being more talented than someone else as well.
Always keep in mind all of the criteria that coaches are looking for.
Our 2017/18 spring season opens with tryouts on February 26th. Tryouts are scheduled to last 3 days, but could last longer.
Cuts will be posted on the last day outside the west doors (band room) on the night of the last day, as well as on the baseball webpage
which can be accessed via the Pius webpage. It is essential that you know that a great deal will be expected of you. We will spend a
great deal of time in practice. This includes Saturdays.
By playing baseball at Pius X you are participating in one of the best programs in the state of Nebraska. We get as much
exposure to pro scouts and college coaches as anyone.

Check bulletin board for tryout times and location. We’ll make every effort to be outside right after school. However, it is
possible we might have to be inside, and it might not be right after school. Prepare to be flexible. Again check the board. Please do
not have your parents contact the school/office as all the information you need will be on the board.
If inside, wear a T-shirt AND a liner (long sleeve T-shirt) AT ALL TIMES. If outside, wear the previous and a sweatshirt or
jacket. If possible wear a hooded sweatshirt. Always bring 2 pair running shoes and a pair of baseball spikes. A baseball cap should
also be worn both inside and outside. The use of a supporter is mandatory and the use of a protective cup is STRONGLY suggested.
We will go outside every day if it is at all possible, so BE PREPARED FOR ALL TYPES OF WEATHER! Put your name on
everything! If it becomes lost, then we can find the owner. Listen to the daily announcements or check the message board for times
and general information. Must be flexible on times as there are many factors that determine where and when we hold tryouts.
You must have a physical and parent consent form before you can tryout.
If you are going to be late or absent for practice, notify Coach Charf PERSONALLY! DO NOT send word with someone
else or assume that we KNOW that you were gone or absent that day. If you can not locate Coach Charf, leave a note in the high
school office by 3:00.
YOU WILL BE EVALUATED ON (keep in mind all are evaluated on all of the following):
- Arm strength, accuracy, and throwing technique
- Fielding ability and technique
