  • Pittsburgh 2015 Global Game Jam This Weekend!
Think you could make a video game? How about making one in 48 hours?

This weekend in 78 countries around the globe over 20,000 people will create thousands of games in just 2 days as part of the 7th annual Global Game Jam. Pittsburgh is once again one of the largest host cities in the world, in the top 25 of 521 sites, with over 130 local game developers participating at a site at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.

"We're lucky to have such a talented group of developers in the Greater Pittsburgh Area," says Gabe Sabourin, the event coordinator of the Pittsburgh Global Game Jam. "With a huge range of participants from local studios, independent developers, colleges, high schools and hobbyists, this event has proven to be a great opportunity to explore new ideas and meet new people."

The Global Game Jam encourages innovation and collaboration by bringing together diverse teams to create new, unique games. Each year, the game jam has a secret theme that is only announced at the start of the jam. Participants use this theme to inspire their creations. There are no other requirements, resulting in games of all different styles and mechanics, and developed on many different platforms. Participants range from college students to professional developers from Pittsburgh's local game studios and come from diverse disciplines including programming, 2D & 3D art, audio design, game design, and game production.

The Pittsburgh Global Game Jam is run by the Pittsburgh chapter of the International Game Developers Association and is supported by local companies and schools including the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon's Entertainment Technology Center, Google, Schell Games, and The Sprout Fund. The Pittsburgh IGDA chapter serves the professional, social, and academic needs of the video game industry in the Pittsburgh area. This year there is also a satellite site run by Carnegie Mellon's IDeATe program, hosting a small group of Carnegie Mellon undergrad students.

The games created during the Global Game Jam will be showcased on Sunday, January 25th 4-6pm at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. This showcase is open to the Pittsburgh community. Everyone is invited to come play the games created by members of Pittsburgh's very own game industry community. After the event, all the games created will be playable from the website.

  • 2015 Global Game Jam
The 7th annual Global Game Jam is on January 23-25th, 2015. From the beginning, Pittsburgh has been one of the biggest sites in the United States and this year is no different. The Art Institute of Pittsburgh will be the host to this year's 120 Pittsburgh jammers. This year the Pittsburgh site will be starting at 7pm, rather than 5pm, to allow for professionals and students to more easily reach downtown for the start of the Jam.

If you're interested in participating in the 2015 GGJ, sign up now! We typically fill up in early January. Click here for more information about this event.
