Sandra Brown, Keven and Mary Diggens, Howard Brown and and Jenny Chaperon whoop it up for Christmas Ho! Ho! Ho! Christmastime at Camberwell Pétanque Club Yep, we missed Christmas last year because we were a bit preoccupied with out move from St. James Park to Lynden Park. But we more than made up for it this year with a huge bash that exceeded all expectations. From the beautiful place settings to the catered main course, this was a very flash affair and everyone had a great time. It was a bit hot early on, but that didn't stop people from filling the pistes. Terry Barter had things under control in the kitchen, the tables looked great, plenty of grog was consumed and Christine Butler's nibbles werefantastic. Well done Christine and the entire kitchen crew, which included Terry. Noela and John Whelan and Margaret Barter. You were all fantastic. President Richard Tarlinton made a gracious speech at which he commended John Paul Ernst's tireless work on behalf of the club.. John Paul's latest effort was building from parts picked up here and there a magnificent water fountain for the back-end pistes. John Paul, you are a gem. Merry Christmas, Pétanquers! Click here for More Christmas Photos Click Here for Avoca Photos Below are the results of Great Gisborne Gazette Club Triples played at Mt Macedon yesterday, Sunday. There were 12 teams representing the four clubs involved, 2 from Caulfield, 2 from Longbeach, 3 from Mt Macedon and 5 from Camberwell. The Longbeach team of Mary, Rod and Marcus were the winners on the day, so their names go onto the perpetual trophy. (CPC need not rush to acquire a trophy cabinet just yet.)Pictured here are John Paul Ernst, Sue Gray and Guy Mercier The wonderful warm country hospitality that Mt Macedon PC is renowned for, was evidence in abundance, making everyone most enjoyable. Well, our pistes at Lynden Park in Camberwell aren’t quite at that level, but they’re good enough for Pyrenees (Victoria) Pétanque Club President Ken Field to exclaim that he was “blown away” by his first visit to our club on the weekend. Field also had other reasons to be blown away. His players romped to a 36 to 20 games victory over Camberwell in the deciding round of games on Sunday and went home with the “Trusty Tape” trophy. But, as always, it was a friendly victory that carried on the tradition of these clubs to have fun and enjoy the game. As a matter of fact, Camberwell “donated” some of its members to Pyrenees when it could field only 12 players in Sunday’s competition. Never mind, the weather couldn’t have been more glorious, the food was superb (not to mention the grog) and as always it was good to have a visit by our country rivals. Saturday was set aside for social pétanque (boules-out-of-the-bucket ) and Ken Field placed first, followed by Christine Butler, Jenny McDonald and Colin Macnamara. On Sunday we got down to serious team pétanque and that’s when Pyrenees cleaned house. The players were treated to a sumptuous dinner of beef bourguignon made by Jose and Jacquie Perez and Jose’s daughter, Christiane. Those who preferred fish had salmon. Camberwell's own DJ, Jenny Chaperon brought the music and flogged all of the old folks onto the dance floor (or a few of them).. There was an unconfirmed rumour that her husband, Max, would present a pole-dancing act, but he somehow decided against it. Next time, Max. Everyone wants to see that act. Meanwhile, seeing petanquers doing the Macarena and line dancing, not to mention doing the progressive barn dance and the Nut Brush was a treat by itself. Well done, Jenny. You were a big hit! The invitational tournament reminded us that pétanque is not all about winning. We have plenty of top-notch competitors who win prizes, but we also like “friendly” home-and-away tournaments with country pétanque clubs like Pyrenees. Bev Grigg, Shirley Scott, Nicole Buffet and Christine Butler during social pétanque Saturday Yes, Camberwell players at the Victorian Doubles Championships looked pleased with themselves at Weird Entertainers' tournament on Sunday. Peter Barker, Sue Gray and Jenny Cuthbert did anyway as they ate lunch. Robert Baxter and David Walker walked away with smiles but no prizes. Thirty-nine teams played in a long and vigorous day of pétanque. Attracted by the marvellous music which issued forth continuously from the Clubhouse, six teams from Camberwell set out to compete in the Victorian tournament. Well, that’s not strictly true. Make it some members of the six teams were attracted by the music. Okay, okay, it was only me. I love the retro music; transports me back to my youth………those careless times sooooo long ago. I had abandoned myself to the music and was singing along, at one stage in the clubhouse, when I noticed a stranger looking at me. Maybe he thought I was serenading him! Perhaps, it was just a Weird look, but I thought I should adjust my posture of abandonment, gather myself together, and scurry out to the pistes with as much dignity as I could muster. This is but a trifle; you want to hear about the Championships, which were hard-fought by the 40 teams which entered across 5 divisions---The Men’s Open, Men’s 60+, The Women’s Open, Women’s 60+ and Juniors. Gloria Wales and Sandra Brown placed Third in the Women's Over-60s division and won bronze medals. A great day’s petanque was had by all. Congratulations to Pierrot Lubin and his members for their work in organising the day. Danny Green and Peter Mangan were the capable Umpires of the tournament. Rod Deakin was responsible for the draw. Proceeds were directed to Victoria Petanque Clubs Inc. and those who competed were encouraged to take back the message to their Clubs to become involved in VPCI. Victoria has by far the most registered players of petanque in Australia and, therefore, a vested interest in the function of VPCI. Umpires Danny Green and Peter Mangan kept order on the pistes. The Mt
Macedon ladies cooked BBQ sausages for those who hadn't taken any lunch, and after
lunch they generously handed around fabulous cakes and slices to all..Twenty-seven Triples teams from 10 clubs participated in Macedon's first Open Tournament, and nine of those teams were from Camberwell. Who says AGMs Are Boring? Ours was a Ripper Photos by Jenny Cuthbert The old giveth way to the new in politics, as they say, and Camberwell Petanque Club's 2012 Annual General Meeting was no exception as 32 civic-minded members cast their votes unanimously for a new Committee, pretty much the same way they elect their leaders in North Korea. Pictured above are outgoing President Bill Claiborne, who, as tradition has it, stood down along with all Committee members, including retiring Treasurer Colin Macnamara, Sandra Brown and Grahame Knight, who were thanked by Vice President Terry Barter, who said Colin had been "the best treasurer CPCI has had." Elected (unanimously) to the new Committee was Richard Tarlinton, President, and Bob Romanes, Treasurer, along with Secretary Sue Gray; the indefatigable Terry; John Paul Ernst; Alma Claiborne and Peter Barker. Nominations for an eighth Committee member were called for but, surprise of surprises, no one seized the opportunity. But as Bill and Terry both remarked, a club like ours is only as as good as it's collective volunteer spirit, and I'm sure the last Committee member can be found. Outgoing President Bill took a stroll down Memory Lane, recalling that not so long ago we were a tight little group of about 14 members, that during one summer evening's torrential rainstorm managed to squeeze into out little green tin shed for shelter. Bill also recalled all of the hard yakka that CPC volunteers had put into spreading tonnes of gravel for our new pistes. He singled out John Paul Ernst and Richard Tarlinton for special mention for their unselfish contributions. He thanked all CPC members for contributing generously to a capital works levy needed to pay for the improvements. Nicole Buffet, who had four wins and a delta of 14, is pictured below. Well done, Nicole! (Photo by Jenny Cuthbert) Mt. Macedon and Camberwell Square Off in Friendly Challenge ‘Twas a wild and wooly day at times, but that didn’t bother the nearly 40 hearty players from the Camberwell and Mt. Macedon pétanque clubs who competed Sunday (June 17) in the annual Jolly Roger Challenge tournament at Lynden Park. Ignoring several sustained downpours of chilly rain, the bush-hardened country folk and their allegedly soft city slickers donned their wind-cheaters and played on. The townies prevailed in the end, by a score of 15 games to 9 and thereby retained the handsome trophy for another year. Scoring errors being a tradition in these friendly inter-club tournaments, CPC’s Patrick Hamon appears in the winners’ circle photo above, but actually Nicole Buffet won four games to Patrick’s three. When this was quietly revealed, Patrick graciously gave his bottle of wine to Nicole. Other top scorers were Robert Baxter, playing for Camberwell and winning all four games, Gloria Wales of CPC, three wins. For Mt. Macedon, Doreen Green, Lindsay Kinghorn and Noelene McKinnon were the high scorers. Robert Baxter hadn't been to Petanque in two years. Hello stranger! He arrived on a red Vespa (sigh, what happened to the Harley-Davidson "Hog" Robert?), charmed the ladies and was the envy of the men. He went on to win his four games and was 'top man' on the day! Hence he was dubbed "the comeback kid"! While the sides competed fiercely, they did so with the kind of friendly fierceness that you normally wouldn’t expect at one of the big state or national tournaments. Our country cousins treat us the same way when we visit their venue at Gisborne, so everybody goes home with a warm, fuzzy feeling. That feeling was enhanced by the huge, steaming pots of soup that Alma and Sue cooked up to warm the players during the lunchtime break. Jenny gave Alma high marks for running the kitchen “like a school tuck shop.” The ladies served up a veritable A feast of yummy soups, crusty bread, sausages, burgers, salads, cheese, cakes and slices. The bottom line for the day was that everybody had fun, which is the point of these friendly interclub tournaments. Speaking of fun, the wine winners in Saturday’s regular Camberwell Social Petanque were Guy Mercier, Peter Barker, Narelle Cook and Sandra Brown. Well done all! Eighty-eight players comprising 44 teams in five divisions filled most of Camberwell's 24 pistes. They traveled from Tasmania, Western Australia, South Australia, New South Wales, Queensland and of course from within all of Victoria. Eric Doublet of the France Pétanque Club in NSW and Patrick Dufresne of Victoria's Dove P.C. walked away with top honors in the Men's Division, followed by Peter Ally and Gerard Finette, both of Weird Entertainers (VIC) in second place and Pierrot Lubin of Weird Entertainers and Stephane Langlois in third place. In the Women's Division, Annick Masson of Weird and Margareth McCormick of WAPA Bayswater P.C., took first place, followed by Kate Mangan of Melbourne P.C. and Elizabeth Sowter of NSW Lake Macquarie P.C., in second, and Jacqueline Nemorin & Eileen Marie of Weird Entertainers in third. In the Over-60 Men's Division, Camberwell P.C.'s David Williams and David Walker won first place, followed by Adrian Clements and Antonio Stojsic of SAPL Club de Petanque d' Adelaide. In third was Vivian Wilmann of Dove and Santiago Mayor of St. Kilda. In the Women's Over 60 Division, Camberwell ladies ruled the roost. CPC hot-shot Gloria Wales, whose was partnered with Pierette Mayor of St. Kilda P.C. won top honors. In second was Sandra Brown and Barbara Solnordal, both of Camberwell, and in third place was Trish Ritman and Lesley Murray, both of Camberwell. In the Open Consolante Division, Susan Begley of NSW Boules Artistes P.C. and Alison Birchall of Newscastle P.C. won first place, followed by Mico Charlot and Jean Marc Allegret of Deception Bay (QLD) in second, and Timothy Stevenson of Newcastle P.C. and Gary Hosie of NSW Boules Artistes P.C. As the sun dipped over the horizon on Sunday, spectators from clubs around Victoria rocked up to see the drama of close eliminations. They also openly admired Camberwell P.C.'s new venue and its attractive pistes and clubhouse. Our club won widespread praise for building the new pistes with mostly volunteer labor, and for hosting a superbly-run National Doubles Tournament on the weekend Richard Tarlinton, a key figure in the start up of CPC’s reincarnation at Lynden Park, put it most succinctly when he said, “Our club looked magnificent. The sun was shining, the birds were singing. The pistes looked stunning and the atmosphere was A1.” While the big prizes in the Men’s and Women’s divisions were won mostly by the big guns of National pétanque tournaments, Camberwell P.C. members were “better than gold medal winners” when it came to hosting, running and catering to this important national tournament. The service given by volunteer scorers, kitchen staff, bartenders, tuck shop attendants and a host of other club volunteers “was 24-carat gold,” Tarlinton said.In a speech given jointly to the competitors, Camberwell Pétanque Club Secretary Sue Gray and PFA Director Jean Paul Boudan said they hoped that all competitors enjoyed playing at CPC's new home. “Camberwell is blessed with a multitude of wonderful volunteers who have worked hard over months getting ready for this event. But it would not have happened without John Paul Ernst. He has been the visionary, the expert on absolutely everything, and the hardest worker of them all,” Gray said. Gray and Boudan praised the CPC kitchen staff, led by Jose Perez and his wife, Jacquie, who worked tirelessly planning the self-catering operation and then working literally from dawn to dusk for three days providing sustenance to the hungry players. In a message to Jose and Jacquie, Gray said, “The club is very lucky to have you as its members and owes you a debt of gratitude.” Pisteup learned from a source in the kitchen that on Saturday night an exhausted Jacquie got home, had a shower and went to bed at 6 p.m., but was up at 5 a.m. to get ready for the next day in the kitchen. That is the kind of commitment that makes a club like Camberwell P.C. great. Well done Jacquie and Jose! Apart from John Paul Ernst, Gray gave special mention to Terry Barter, CPC Vice President, who worked tirelessly on the self-catering and other aspects of the tournament. For her own part, Pisteup call tell you on good authority that Gray was the driving force behind Camberwell P.C.'s winning the bid as host of the tournament, along with her partner, Richard Tarlinton, who is our liaison to the Boroondara Council and a member of Joint Management Committee with the co-tenants of the clubhouse. Kudos went also to Jose and Jacquie’s hard-working kitchen assistants: Nicole Buffet, Sue Gray, Terry Barter, Pat Osborne, Alma Claiborne, Trish Ritman, Felix Hernandez, Mary and Kevin Diggens, Pam Romanes, and Bee Moignard. Although he was not at the tournament, Clive Windley got special mention for his quiet, behind-the-scenes hard work throughout our move to Lynden Park. Most encouraging was the hard work put in by new members of the club, including Pat Osborne, Bee Moignard, Pam and Bob Romanes and Edward Parades. A club like ours is only as good as its members who are willing to volunteer their time and hard work. Gray also commended the “lovely ladies” Renee Obers and Elaine Chanloup, for manning the scoring tables all weekend; the barmen, David Garnham, Richard Tarlinton, Paul Veith, Philip James, Bob Romanes and Evan Gill. Helen and Colin Macnamara worked all day selling chits for food and drink, and then stayed to clean up at night, and Edward Paredes brought order to our parking lot, with the help of Peter Barker. Numerous other volunteers, including John and Nola Whelan, Diane Saugy, pitched in to perform various duties. Characteristic of
Camberwell Pétanque Club, a number of members who were competing in the
tournament took time between games to lend a hand at the bar, carry umbrellas
etc. and pitch in with the non-playing volunteers. Finally, Gray gave thanks to
Muriel and Stephane Langlois for organizing the following sponsors: Evian, Red and
White vineyard, Palomba Antipasto, Calendar Cheese, and Bettocchi. Camberwell Pétanque Club is grateful to these sponsors. Petanque Federation of Australia Sports Director Andre Deramond said that Camberwell Pétanque Club had “set a benchmark for all Australian pétanque clubs with its first-class handling of this tournament.” He told Pisteup that its “commitment and its participation of members were absolutely fantastic.” Deramond gave special mention to John Paul Ernst, not only for designing the new pistes and directing the club’s volunteers in building them, but also in running the computerized scoring program, with the assistance of Grahame Knight. “It made my life so much easier,” said Deramond, who also was the tournament director.Deramond also said that while some of the new pistes were a bit fresh (soft), overall the playing area was “fantastic” in its design, marking and scoring boards on each lane. “It makes other clubs feel like going up to the next level of excellence,” he said. Tournament umpires
were Ray Beaumont of South Australia
and Danny Green of Mt. Macedon
Petanque Club. Announcement of cash awards, trophies and medals was made by PFA
Director Jean Paul Boudan. Josh Frydenberg, federal member for Kooyong, presented the prizes. Sue Gray said that as Warren Sowter, PFA National Director of Coaching, was leaving at the end of the tournament he congratulated Camberwell P.C. for turning on a good show. Similarly, Stan Wilson and Glenis Head from Gawler P.C. in South Australia were green with envy over our pistes and the club's enthusiastic volunteer involvement. Congratulatory emails flooded into Sue's computer. Typical of them was one from Jean Claude Dufroux, president of the St. Kilda PétanqueClub, saying, "Well Done Camberwell, You were very well prepared and you had an impressive number of volunteers making the 2012 National Double a very special and enjoyable tournament. Blast from the Past:A Walk Down Memory Lane Following are some snapshots of memorable moments during our 12 years at St. James Park, Hawthorn, before we moved to Lynden Park, Camberwell, near where the club was founded. CPC Providore John-Paul Ernst checks out the unique piste dividers that he designed and built in 2009. John-Paul guided other CPC volunteers in installing the dividers, which include benches and an easily-removable section for access to adjoining pistes by disabled players. The club owes a debt of gratitude to John-Paul for his skills and hard work in making our pistes the best in Victoria.
The Great Pyramids of Camberwell? Nope. Just piles of sifted gravel on our club's pistes ready to be re-spread to make the playing ground more playable. Led by Clive Windley, volunteers have worked hard on the pistes, hand-sifting the gravel, spreading, raking and rolling. All members of CPC extend their heartfelt gratitude to these hardworking volunteers for transforming these notoriously boggy pistes into first-rate playing grounds. It's not easy work and they happily pitched in. FOR MORE PHOTOS OF OUR PISTE-BUILDING AND RENOVATING CLICK HERE

Report to
Members
By Sue Gray
Happy Anniversary CPC.
We have now been in residence at Lynden Park for a whole year. It’s certainly been a very busy year with lots of hard work completed by many of our members, a big thanks to all who responded to the call for help in our early days.
A great big thank you must go to John-Paul who has been the driving force behind all that the club has achieved in our first year. You will soon see his latest work of art, a drinking fountain situated on the north side of the pistes. This fountain has been funded by a grant from Boroondara Council, but as we couldn’t buy what we actually wanted John-Paul not be deterred, simply designed and made us a drinking fountain.
While I can report that we have settled in well and with comparative ease, it must be said that it has taken a good deal of effort by your Committee working behind the scenes. We are fortunate that we enjoy a great relationship with our co tenants’ the Veteran’s Car Club of Australia and the Girl Guides. The Joint Management Committee also works to ensure that the facility is being well looked after and maintained. The cost for achieving this comes from the facility being hired out to a variety of community groups as well as casual hirers.
With Christmas fast approaching we are looking forward to our Christmas Party on 7th December. The party will start around 6.30 after normal Friday play. This year it is to be catered for with the club subsidising half the cost.
Before that, however, we have the French Festival at Como House on 24th & 25th of November, where a few Camberwell PC members led by Grahame Knight are actively promoting the game of Petanque as well as our wonderful Club.
Our membership continues to grow with the two latest additions being Ron Saunders and Garnet Edwards.
There are a few more events on the Petanque calendar, the last for the year being The Great Gisborne Gazette Club Triple Challenge which is hosted by Mt Macedon Petanque Club on 9th December.
Next year the Committee is establishing a volunteer roster system that it hopes members will happily embrace.
As Bill Claiborne said in his Presidents report at our last AGM “A club is only as good as its members’ willingness to pitch in and make it a great club.”
We have a great club now, so let us make sure with everyone pulling their weight it continues to be a great club.

Comes to
Lynden Park
The Camberwell Pétanque Club has moved into the former Ladies bowling club in Wakefields Grove, Camberwell, and it cordially invites its new neighbors in Lynden Park--and fun-loving people everywhere--to come take a look at this lively French game of boules and see why our club has become known throughout Victoria for its conviviality and joie de vivre. In the summertime we play Twilight pétanque at 4:30 p.m., followed by a barbecue, and in Winter we play Saturday afternoons.
