Malware Removal

Does your computer have malware?  If so, follow these steps*:

Note:  These steps will not remove all malware, but will help get you started.  As mentioned in step 7, please go to a malware removal forum where trained experts can assist you in completely ridding your computer of malware.  Good luck!

1.  Clear all internet cache and temporary files (tutorials available

2.  Download some of this software to help remove malware:

        Free Anti-Spyware and Anti-Adware Programs:

Ad-Aware, Spy Sweeper*,  Spybot Search & Destroy, Spyware Doctor*, & Windows Defender

            * denotes that the product is a trial version

2.  Restart in Safe Mode with Networking (tutorial coming soon)

3.  Check Add/Remove programs for suspicious-looking software.  If you are unsure of some names, either post the     name on a forum or look them up on Google.

4.  Scan with any anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc scanner that you have and remove everything it finds.  Save the logs for      future use.

5.  Use one or more of the following free online scans:

     ActiveScanBitDefenderewido r Housecall

Save the logs for later use and remove everything possible.

 6. Restart in normal mode

7.  Download HijackThis, then post a log and results from the online scans in a malware-removal forum and follow all      their instructions.  Make sure to read any "stickies" they might have with instructions first.

8.  Make sure to remove all System Restore points. (tutorial coming soon) (XP & ME only)

If you do not currently have a firewall installed, or only have the XP SP2 firewall, I would strongly recommend ZoneAlarm or a similar firewall.

*Steps are for a computer running Windows XP.  Some programs discontinued support for Windows 98, but older versions are available.
