Unit 3 is the largest unit in this years geometry course. It is centered around solving triangles, which means finding missing dimensions for triangles (both angles and side lengths).
We will start out this unit giving students strategies to solve right triangles (triangles that have one right angle). We study the Pythagorean theorem and then Special Right Triangles (30-60-90 and 45-45-90). After studying Special Right Triangles, we spend time exploring the three trigonometric functions and how they can be used in right triangles to solve for missing side lengths.
After using trig functions to find missing side lengths, we will study the inverse of trig functions and how to use these in order to find missing angles inside of right triangles.
Once we have built up a stock-pile of strategies for solving right triangles, we will look at some different methods for finding missing dimensions in triangles that are NOT right triangles. We will end up calling these the Law of Cosines and the Law of Sines.
