In response to the question:
"There's been some confusion as to whether or not reading notes are okay to use on the final, so long as they were taken by us (for example, I have a sheet where I've listed all the equations I thought were important so I don't have to flip through the book to find them). They were taken entirely by me and using the textbook, but not in class or section. Other students in my house have similar notes and are wondering the same thing. Is it okay to use them on the final?"
The answer is:
The instructions on the exam cover page say
"While taking the test, you may use any class handouts, your textbook Purcell, your own notes taken in lecture of [or] section, and your own homework. You may not use homework solutions or notes other than your own."
The first sentence is an enumerated list of allowed materials, and notes taken outside of lecture or section are not in that list. The exclusion in the second sentence is not meant to be exhaustive; for example, it doesn't specifically exclude other textbooks, but that is implied by the first sentence.
So we cannot allow notes of the type suggested. There is a reasonable argument for making the policy more lenient in the future, but we have to follow what has been written given that the exam has been distributed and is due today.
The final exam review will be held Monday 6/11 at 7 pm in the lecture hall.
* No late HW will be accepted for HW 9 due 6/8 because we will post the solutions on 6/8 so they are available for final exam studying.
* HW9 will not be returned before the final exam is due, so please keep a copy if you want to use it for studying or during the exam.
An updated June schedule has been posted. Changes:
* topics for 6/6 and 6/8 lectures changed
* Final exam due THURSDAY 6/14 4 pm (instead of 6/15 at noon) -- to ensure we can get grades in on time
Please see the May and June calendars for updates to HW due dates due to Ditch Day:
* HW due 5/30 has been delayed to 6/1
* Two problems on the above HW have been delayed to being due 6/8
Due to an additional conflict, the Quiz 4 Review will be held at the usual time, Friday 6/1 7 pm. It will be in the lecture hall.
We are announcing well ahead of time that the Quiz 4 review will be held at an unusual time, Thursday 5/31 at 8 pm in the lecture hall. Please send email to Prof. Golwala if this time is unsuitable (we are aware of no freshman conflicts).
A review will be held for Quiz 3 Friday, May 18 at 7 p.m. in the lecture hall.
A review will be held for Quiz 2 Friday, May 4 at 7 p.m. in the lecture hall.
