Swartz's is gone; replaced by Meijer and other stores.  Derk's moved out of Portage.  Industrial State Bank?  Gone, but 1st Reformed Church still there.  Wolbers, McDonalds, Kiddyland - all gone.  Those lands where we bicycled and played ball and slid down hills - all covered by commercial development and thousands of houses.

They only exist in our memories, and those are swiftly fading. On this page I'll refresh your memories with photographs, courtesy of the Portage Library and Todd Collection. Now, if I can only remember where I left my keys!

Westdnedge runs north from lower left to upper right. On corner is Garlick home, gas station, Horseshoe Inn, and farm where Southland Mall would be built. First traffic light in Portage installed this intersection in 1940.  43k v. 1 Sep 8, 2014, 11:22 AM Tom Andrews
