Welcome to Neurophotonics Lab
Principal investigator: Myunghwan (Mark) Choi, Ph.D.
Department of Biomedical Engineering, Sungkyunkwan University

"We develop new technologies at the interface of light and living system,
and generate breakthroughs in neuroscience by using them."

We use light as a tool to understand and manipulate living nervous system, aiming to address pressing problems in neuroscience. Specifically we are focusing on understanding myelin dynamics and taste system. We take multidisciplinary approaches integrating optics, engineering, and neuroscience (e.g. multi-photon microscopy, optogenetics, ...).

  • Our SpeRe work is highlighted in Nature Methods (Link).
  • Junhwan's SpeRe paper is published (Link)!
  • Dr. Choi is appointed as an Associate Editor for Optics Express.
  • J. Han received 'Student Travel Award' at AChemS 2017.
  • J. Kwon received 'Best Poster Award' at ABC 2016.
  • J. Kwon received 'Best Poster Award' at CNIR workshop 2015.

  • Graduate student: We seek a candidate for master or doctoral degree, who is highly motivated and has strong interest on neurophotonics. joining To apply, please send email to PI.
  • Undergraduate intern: If you are interested in graduate studies, we highly recommend undergraduate internship. We currently have 1-2 openings on studying optical taste modulation.
