Welcome to Philosophy @ Island Bay, a website on which you will find materials developed primarily by staff at the Island Bay Primary School for teaching philosophy in primary school.  The site was the result of a visit by Professor Thomas E. Wartenberg to Wellington in 2012.  Staff members Sondra Bacharach and Ramon Das of the Philosophy Department at Victoria University Wellington were instrumental in the development of this project.

At the left, you will see titles of picture books that are excellent ways to introduce philosophy to primary school students.  Each page contains a brief summary of the book, a quick introduction to the philosophical issues, and a series of questions that can be used to initiate a philosophy discussion among primary school children.  We have attempted to include as many books by New Zealand authors as was possible, since they are underrepresented in other programs for introducing philosophy in primary schools.  A great deal more specific information on how to discuss philosophy with young children can be found at Professor Wartenberg's website:  http://www.teachingchildrenphilosophy.org.

We hope you enjoy the website and come back often.  Send us feedback, please!  Comments can be made after each book page.
