In United States, 22% of children who are 2-5 years old have cavities (avg. 1.1 per child).
[Philos Jagna Assessment, 2013]

For the past few years, Philos Health has been working towards providing the people of Jagna with services beyond medical aid.  The new Philos Dental Program will provide another level of health and wellness in an area of profound need.  Focusing on children first, this program will include a brand new dental clinic as well as supplies, staff, and education on oral care and maintenance. Program will be supplemented by volunteer dentists and dental students from the Philippines and United States.

Our Work So Far

In June 2013, Philos Health began their dental program by providing toothbrushes and toothpaste to children and their parents, along with a lesson on how to brush.  Volunteers applied fluoride to clean teeth, as seen in the picture to the left. With the help of local dentists and dental assistants, we collected preliminary data on dental health in Jagna.

Future Directions

The Philos Dental Program will provide a variety of dental services, including:

  1. A dental clinic staffed by a dentist and dental assistant, complete with all equipment needed for treating patients.
  2. Toothbrushes, toothpaste, and fluoride treatments provided to each child semiannually.
  3. Partner with Global Child Dental Fund to insure that standardized protocols are provided based on international standards.
