Ten boats took to the water on Sunday for the continuation of the Points Series. Conditions were cloudy accompanied by a relentless soaking rain and an easterly force 2-3 wind. Jack Douglas helming his mother’s Europe got away to a good start downriver towards the first mark of a figure of eight course closely followed by the Albacores of Robin MacArthur and Sandy Roger crewed by Kerry Williamson. Euan Macdonald in his Aero 7 and Hunter Williamson’s Solo both hit the first mark as the strong incoming tide pushed them back against it and incurred a penalty turn. Hunter then appeared to be experiencing steering problems mid-river which lost him some time. To the rear of the fleet were Gordon Niven helming a Laser and Vicky Wright crewed by Anna in a Club Feva. With Robin and Sandy neck and neck just before the end of the first lap, Sandy managed to pull ahead during the 2nd while Hunter had caught up with the leaders. Bill Inches in his Firefly led the slower boats followed by Euan. With the wind dying at the end of the 2nd round, all boats were struggling back downriver against the strong incoming tide, but Bill making good inroads on the fleet in his Firefly, but they battled on for the final round with Hunter again having a close encounter with the 1st mark of the course and incurring a further penalty turn. There were a few retirees during the final lap – Jack, Gordon and Vicky bowed out due to lack of wind. First over the line were Sandy and Kerry followed by Bill with Andrew in 3rd position.
Eleven boats entered the 2nd race of the evening. With very little wind the Ood implemented an easier two mark course, following which the wind immediately increased in strength again! After a hiccough at the start of the race with a faulty hooter, the boats finally got away with Grant storming into the lead, a position he held throughout the three rounds with the Albacores of Sandy crewed by Kerry and Robin crewed by Paul Rytson in valiant but futile pursuit. Hunter came next closely followed by Jack in his Streaker with Andrew only one second behind him as they finished the 1st lap, then Bill. Euan’s Aero led the slower boats followed by Vicky in her Europe then Eve Humphrey in the Club Feva. First over the line was Grant followed by Hunter with Sandy and Kerry in 3rd position.
The lack of wind on Saturday did not deter ten boats taking to the water for the Club’s Annual Fun Race. The Commodore set a challenging course which involved backward sailing at various stages of the proceedings. The Albacore crewed by Sandy Rodger and Eric Taylor took an early lead closely followed by Grant Williamson in his father’s Laser. There was quite a bit of bunching at the windward mark, the Commodore had allowed competitors to use their paddles in the light conditions but some took advantage of this relaxation of the rules to splash their rivals as they sailed on by. Cadets Eve Humphry and Anna Woodhead in the Feva were determined ot finish the course and although Jack Douglas was a late starter he elected to paddle his way around the entire course to take first place for the Cadets with Eve and Anna second. Adults Sandy & Eric took first place for the adults. A well attended BBQ was held after racing and the Commodore is very grateful to all the members who made the evening a great success.
