It is with great sadness that I inform members that Walter died suddenly at home on Friday 13th.  He had just celebrated his 91st Birthday a month previously.

Walter was an Honorary Member of Perth Sailing Club and was the Club’s Commodore in 1968 and again in 1981. His family were all keen sailors and Walter was a very talented helm frequently winning many, if not all the club’s trophies at various times during his many years sailing at Perth. He was a key member of the Sailing Club in its formative years assisting in relocating the club to its current location at Willowgate. Even after he stopped sailing, he would be a reasonably frequent visitor ensuring that the club was being kept in good order.  The Cumming family donated a bench in memory of his daughter Joan who passed away a few years ago, so that members could watch the racing unfold from the clubhouse. Walter and his daughter Irene in their Albacore were very competitive on the water.  Walter was a member of the Albacore Association and was Race Officer when the Nationals were once held at Carnoustie Sailing Club, where the Royal Navy provided use of a Support Vessel as a committee boat.  He was also the first and possibly the only member of Perth Sailing Club to have won the Scottish National Albacore Championships.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Irene and his family at this sad time.

Funeral will be held at Perth Crematorium on Wednesday 25th September at 12:30Hrs and afterwards at Huntingtower Hotel.

Bob Watson
