News - June 2011 - Dr Ray Matthews, MBE

Congratulations to the Chair of the Friends of Paxton Pits Nature Reserve, Dr Ray Matthews, who was awarded an MBE for 'services to Conservation in Cambridgeshire' in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.
Ray received the MBE from HRH The Prince of Wales at Buckingham Palace in December.

Ray insists that although he is the recipient, the award is as much a recognition for the huge volunteer effort that underpins Paxton Pits Nature Reserve.

Ray said that talking to other recipients before the Investiture really brought home the breadth of committed volunteering in the UK. He also said that The Prince of Wales had revealed a knowledge of the gravel pit origins of the Reserve, and had added “I’m so pleased to hear that you have Nightingales!”
