I have been working as a professional software developer for the last sixteen years, with seven of those years as a freelance - project based - developer; this means I have experience of the complete life-cycle of the development process: from systems-analysis through to training & support. I am extremely self-motivated and fully capable of working without supervision.

I am pro-active in my approach to my work; fixing issues before they become problems. I like to do a job properly and I take pride in my work; whether acting individually or as part of a team. I enjoy tasks that allow me to exercise my creativity, imagination and intelligence. I am extremely analytical, approaching every assignment as a series of questions, a facility that has served me well in terms of designing and coding successful, effective software.

Most recently I have been programming in ASP.Net & Javascript (1 year+), VB.Net & T-SQL (5 years+) and VBA - MS Access & Excel (16 years) and would consider these to be my current primary skill-set.

§       Strategic Maintenance Planning   [2010 - 2013]

Strategic Maintenance Planning is the leading provide of Computerised Maintenance Management Systems and a Microsoft® Gold Certified Partner.

I worked at SMP for just short of three years as a developer on their CMMS software. I was initially  engaged to develop a module for the design, scheduling and performance of computerised Health & Safety inspections of airport sites for ExxonMobil.

With the completion of that project I have been involved with on-going development & maintenance of their main application (HolisTech™ Horizon) and its PDA counterpart; using my experience to streamline and automate the IT team's development techniques.

Since December 2011 I have been working on the design and development of their next-generation  web-based application (HolisTech™ Web); using ASP.Net and telerik web controls.

§       Freelancing   [2009 - 2010]

Undertook some freelance contracting for various clients (including WHSmith and Datalibrium) whilst looking for a permanent position  (See below for testimonials).

§       Valldata (permanent position) [2008 - 2009]

Valldata is a data capture / marketing / payment-processing specialist dealing primarily with charities.

For approximately 8 months I worked for Validata as part of  a team of seven IT developers dealing with the ongoing development and maintenance of the various customer response systems.

The majority of the applications were built using .Net with a SQL server back end, but the position also involved some work with other technologies (MS Access, Foxpro, ASP.Net).

§        Datalibrium (permanent position)   [2007 - 2008]

Datalibrium was a newly started IT consultancy offering computer hardware, bespoke software and technical support in the Thames valley area.

I was employed for approximately eighteen months by Datalibrium as their principal software developer.

My primary responsibility was the design, development and maintenance of a software package (with TSQL back end) used by a local accountancy practice to run the bulk of their accounting business.

I was also in charge of the ongoing design and implementation of the company’s base class library.

All of the above projects (and others) were developed using a VB.Net front end with SQL Server back end.

§        Office Software Solutions   [2000 - 2007]

For seven years I worked as a self-employed freelance software developer employed on a wide variety of contracts; I covered the full life-cycle of the development of each project from initial analysis, design, development, documentation and (where required) training, along with customer support.

Since each project was different I had to learn new systems and software technologies as required.

My clients included WHSmith, Channel 4 and Spurgeon’s Childcare. Please see below for testimonials.

§        WHSmith Ltd   [1996 - 2000]

For four years I worked for WHSmith Logistics department; brought in originally for administrative duties I quickly demonstrated my IT capabilities and was promoted to a position where I could develop software solutions for various departments within the company (principally supply chain). I left Smiths to pursue a freelance career in software development.

The following are a few testimonials from some of the clients I worked with while self employed:

BioBreez is an inventive company with a commitment to provide simple solutions to complex problems within the world of microbiology; to this end we looked to source a software development company to create the world’s first Biological Risk Assessment application. After careful consideration BioBreez partnered up with Paul Cole and tasked Paul with this complex project.

From start to finish we found Paul’s grasp and understanding of this project to be inspirational. Paul’s ability to learn and provide a platform that surpassed our initial requirements was second to none. Paul’s (out of the box) thinking together with his commitment to delivering this project on time and on budget has enabled BioBreez to gain market recognition as a forward thinking company; to this end BioBreez has recently patented this software in the US and gained substantial funding for the US market.

I have no reservations in recommending Paul to any company (regardless of size or market presence).

Damon K Farrell
BioBreez Technologies

Paul has completed a couple of projects for us over the last 12 – 18 month [2006 – 2007].  He has completed work for our organisation, and a client organisation; Channel 4. He is able to take a fairly vague, non-technical brief, and by asking the right questions, he creates a technical solution that meets clients’ requirements.

He has proved pleasant, reliable and his applications do ‘exactly what it says on the tin’.

Deborah Rees
Innecto Reward Consulting

I have known and worked with Paul for over five years. Paul has completed many projects for WHSmith during this time.

In this time Paul has always worked diligently to complete the projects and I have never had cause for complaint. I find Paul to be a trustworthy individual who always follows up on his commitments and I have no qualms in recommending his work to others.

James Miles
Logistics Contract Manager

Paul joined us as at Datalibrium as a Software Developer in 2007. His work is of a consistently high standard and is always delivered on time and on budget. Paul has a very personable nature and is easy to work with.

We continue to work with Paul on various projects and would have no hesitation in recommending his vast software development experience.
