Helping Families... Children Thriving... Growing Friendships... Sharing Cultures... Discovering the USA...
These are some of the things that make the Au Pair Program so special.
And this website's here to help you along your journey.
What is an Au Pair? “Au pair” means “on par” or equal. Au pairs and 18-26 year olds from over 60 different countries who travel to the United States on a J-1 Visa to acquire a better understanding and appreciation of American life while living with an American family and caring for their young children.
I designed this website to help au pairs and host families, mainly in the Southern Maryland area. There's information about frequently asked questions, to include: educational opportunities, things to do in the area, medical issues, travel options, as well as a ton of other subjects. Hopefully you'll find the information helpful.
My family is living proof that au pairs can truly be life-savers. In 2004, due to medical reasons, we found ourselves in sudden need of live-in childcare to help with our children. Nannies were outrageously expensive, and they didn't seem to fit our needs. Most were unwilling to work hours other than 9a-5p, and most wouldn't have anything to do with helping out with light housework or errands. We heard about the Au Pair Program and we figured we'd look into it. We found out that it was affordable and seemed to fit all of our needs. We were able to have an au pair in our home within a week! She stayed with us for a year and a half. We've hosted several au pairs over the years and still stay in regular contact with most of them. We consider them to be part of our family, like our little sisters.
As I've worked for two different agencies, and seen that there are many commonly accepted practices, I decided to design this website to be non-agency specific. I wanted to provide a site from which all could benefit, regardless of their agency affiliation. It is my hope that this website is truly universal, and that the information within is applicable to all au pairs and host families (I'm sure there are a few exceptions). It's so crucial that au pairs and host families feel supported during their time together; I'm more than happy to be a part of that process. I've been told that this site is great for newcomers to the Southern Maryland area who don't even have au pairs, and who are just looking to navigate the area and find things to do. So, regardless of your situation, I hope that you like the site, check it often, and enjoy yourselves.
It's pretty easy to find your way around on this site. All you have to do is take a look at the subjects on the left (under the Navigation header), find what you are interested in, and click on it. Within each subject there are usually several topics, going into even further detail. Those topics will be listed at the bottom of each subject's "front page". You just click on each of those subpages to find out more information.
NOTE- I update and expand this site on a regular basis, so try to check back often, as there is always something new being added. Please let me know if there's something you'd like me to add, something you'd like to see, or something that needs editing. I really appreciate your input. After all-- this website is for you :)
