My research focuses primarily on phonological opacity and the constraint-based analysis of tone. Much of my work is specifically focused on the analysis of Bantu tone sytems, where multiple tones often interact opaquely to give rise to complex tone patterns.

Some particular phenomena that I am currently interested in include
  • binary tone shift and tone spread
  • grammatical or "melodic" tone patterns in verbs
  • downstep
  • the construction of prosodic domains, and their phonological evaluation
  • tone reversal languages, whereby etymological H tones generally surface as L, and vice-versa
