During the summer of 2008. I worked in the laboratory of Dr. Kimberly Cook-Chennault (Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics); Mark Higgins, teacher from Princeton High School, also worked on this research with me. Our goal was to determine if energy can be harvested using piezoelectric elements placed in the keypads and vibrating parts of a cell phone. These piezoelectric elements produce a voltage when the key is depressed, perhaps generating appreciable current. If so, it may be possible to extend the battery life between charges, or allow for smaller batteries, and therefore smaller and lighter phones.
