    Golem, Puzzle

This large figure is made of interlocking gears and other metal parts that seem to be constantly moving towards an orderly configuration only to scramble again before the pattern is complete.

Breach (Su) As part of activating its wall of gears ability, a puzzle golem may choose to have that use of the ability deal no damage to creatures and objects passing through the wall. If so, any creature or object passing through the wall is transported to another location as if by a gate effect used for planar travel. The destination of this gate effect is determined by the puzzle golem's creator at the time of the golem's creation and cannot be changed thereafter.

Death Burst (Ex) When a puzzle golem is reduced to 0 or fewer hit points, it explodes in a shower of razor-sharp gears and debris. All creatures within a 10-foot burst take 12d6 points of slashing damage—a DC 18 Reflex save results in half damage. The save DC is Constitution-based.

Grind (Ex) A puzzle golem deals an additional 2d10+12 points of slashing damage when it makes a successful grapple check as razor-sharp gears and blades emerge from its body to grind and slice its foe.

Immunity to Magic (Ex) A puzzle golem is immune to any spell or spell-like ability that allows spell resistance. In addition, certain spells and effects function differently against a puzzle golem, as noted below.

    • A grease spell cast on the golem causes it to move quickly for 1d6 rounds, as if under the effects of haste.

    • A rusting grasp spell deals damage to a clockwork golem normally, and makes the golem staggered for 1d6 rounds (no save).

Unlockable (Ex) As a standard action that provokes attacks of opportunity, a creature may attempt to unlock a puzzle golem by manipulating the golem's gears. To do so, the creature must have at least one free hand, and must be able to both see and reach the golem. The creature attempts a Disable Device check with a DC equal to the golem's CMD. If the check succeeds, the puzzle golem must use its next action to activate its wall of gears and breach abilities, and cannot thereafter resume its normal form for at least 1 round.

Wall of Gears (Su) As a standard action, a puzzle golem can fold into a whirling wall of gears measuring 10 feet by 10 feet. Anyone passing through the wall takes 15d6 points of slashing damage. If the wall appears in the space of a creature other than the puzzle golem, that creature can attempt a DC 18 Reflex save to leap to one side and avoid the damage entirely. The puzzle golem can take no actions while in this form except to resume its normal form as a move action. A puzzle golem's AC and immunities remain the same while it is in this form.

The cost of creating the golem does not include any keys to which the golem is tied, but each key can be any object on hand during the golem's creation; it need not be specially prepared to function as a key.
