Development of Participative Democracy and Active Citizenship



Participants receive course-related material and will have to read it beforehand: 1. a presentation of the results of the desk studies from the Grundtvig Project "Strengthen Participative democracy through collaborative Learning"; 2. Preparatory material for the different modules included in the course schedule.


1. To improve the training of people involved in non-formal adult education and voluntary work in how to develop participative democracy, collaborative learning and active citizenship.
2. To provide participants with an analysis of the competencies related to how one can strengthen local democracy and of the tools necessary to acquire influence in the political processes in the municipalities.
3. To involve participants in the analysis of best practice and to introduce them to examples of participative democracy, collaborative learning and active citizenship, and to motivate them to develop common activities in the field.

At the end of the training course participants:
1. will have acquired knowledge of the various aspects of participative democracy and the idea of active citizenship on local, regional, national and European levels and of ways of addressing the issue;
2. will have an idea of which competencies are necessary in order to develop the practice of participative democracy and acquire influence on political processes;
3. will have a toolbox of innovative methods to be used in teaching participative democracy and active citizenship;
4. will have improved their competencies in negotiation and networking;
5. will hopefully feel motivated to develop participative democracy in their home country/local area.


The course aims to strengthen participative democracy. This will characterize
the methodology of the course. It will be based on the participants’ experience in the subject of the course, and will attempt to achieve optimal interaction between the trainers and the participants themselves. The training will be based on collaborative learning methods.
There will be a blend of facilitator’s presentations, pair work and group/team work, peer teaching sessions, simulations, case studies, problem-solving exercises and project visits. The latter should contribute towards, as well as illustrate, ”best practice” within the various areas of focus and help encourage participants to launch activities on a local level at the end of the course.


When concluding the course in a present way, the participants will have access to a virtual forum where to be able to exchange experiences and materials following the contributions and acquired knowledge during the course. This activity will have a duration of three months from the end of the course, ante the animation is a responsibility of the course provider,
