"My approach to mastering has changed over the years. I was introduced to to the craft when 1630 master tapes were the norm. I learned to edit analog tape and eventually edit in the digital realm using a Sony DAE 3000 digital audio editor. Pultec, Sontec, Fairchild, Neumann and Teletronix were the brands on the nameplates. Later, names like Maselec, GML, Avalon and Manley became industry standards. I became familiar with the intricacies of all these units. I was trained in the art of lacquer cutting by Carl Rowatti at Trutone , one of the most respected cutting engineers in the country. He taught me how to align tape transports and noise reduction systems as well as maintain and repair these fine machines. Carl also demonstrated how to be a critical listener; to listen with a technical ear as well as a creative one.
I became familiar with processing in the digital realm using a Weiss BW102, one of the first digital 24 bit processors. It was revolutionary being able to do EQ, compression and limiting without converting to analog and back again. Eventually, DAW's (Digital Audio Work Stations) took over and I learned to edit in computer land using another industry standard, Sonic Solutions. I've worked in several rooms in New York from Trutone to The Hit Factory to Classic Sound to Masterdisk. All these facilities had giant speakers and racks of analog gear. My first inclination was to convert the source to analog for processing. As I said in my opening sentence, I don't feel this way any longer. I work in the digital domain. My set up is very simple :
DAW, high quality digital processors (aka Plug-ins), good digital to analog conversion, amplifier, speakers and an accurate listening room. The bottom line for me is that I love music. I've played drums in a major label signed band and continue to play guitar for pleasure. Nothing makes me happier than turning a few knobs (virtual as they may be) and bringing a track to to life, to another level. When a client contacts me and says "Joe you killed it, it sounds great!" well, that makes me feel good too. I've been mastering this way since 2009 with great results and happy clients.
Mastered material can be delivered via DDP, Red Book CD, Individual mastered files, tracks mastered specifically for lacquer (vinyl) cutting as well as high resolution files for digital (iTunes) distribution.
Thanks for your interest in my mastering service and I hope to have an opportunity to work on your next project."
