Students enrolled in band work together to produce two major performances each year, concert and jazz band contests, and many other events. Each grade level band meets separately each day, has playing tests, and students attend one group lesson each week. Students are also given the opportunity to perform in solo and ensemble events at the IGSMA Solo and Ensemble Festival.
Students can participate in the Jazz Program by audition. The Jazz Ensemble meets at least once each week after school and competes in many different performances and contests each year. All members of our Jazz Ensemble are also members of their grade level band.
Students at Parkland may join the band in sixth grade whether or note they have received any prior instruction in the fifth grade program or private lessons. New seventh and eighth grade students may join with the help of a private instructor. Please feel free to e-mail Mr. Berens with any questions about joining the band.

Our 5th Grade Band Program
Students who start band in 6th grade at Parkland either start with no experience at all, or they were members of the 5th grade band as an elementary school student. Our 5th Grade Band students (made from students of Valley View, Riverwood, and Landmark Schools) meet after school at Parkland for rehearsals. Students attend twice each week: once as a smaller sectional group and once as a full band. Students perform at least three concerts each year. The 5th Grade Band Program is currently co-directed by Ms. Ambrose and Mr. Berens.
