Activity and Support groups available for People with Parkinson’s (PwP)

The Branch promotes the activities listed as there is evidence that they are beneficial to PwP.

The activities are run by either accredited or recognised instructors and they take responsibility for their groups. If you are interested in any of the activities please contact the lead person first. They can answer any questions you have and, if appropriate, give you further information. No previous experience of having participated in any of these activities is necessary.

All activities and social groups are made available to those with Parkinson’s Disease and their carers. They are informal and friendly and provide opportunities to meet others and socialise.

ACTIVITY GROUPS

Nordic Walking

Involves walking over grass on Bristol Downs for approx 45 mins covering 1-2 km. Nordic Walking poles are supplied and used to aid movement. Account is taken of PwP’s walking speeds and pauses for stretching are allowed for during the walk. Dance for Parkinson’s

Is mainly seated using music and free movements, with optional opportunities for moving to music in standing. Classes are led by dancers from The Original Spinners, trained to deliver dance to PwP.

Exercise classes

Exercise as Medicine. Involves 30 minutes in the gym using equipment, following a personally tailored programme, and a 30 minutes circuit training activity. Activities can involve sitting and standing and can be adapted to individual needs. Irish Set Dancing

Involves dancing in a group of 4 pairs of dancers and PwP are paired with experienced Irish Set dancers. Dance moves are all called and the speed of the music is reduced. Each set last approximately 10 minutes and you can take part as you feel able to. There are breaks between the sets and refreshments are available. Non-contact Boxing

Requires good flexibility, movement and agility and the ability to move around the gym unaided. However, there is opportunity for less able participants to take part. Venue: Broad Plain Boxing Club, Clement Street, BS2 9ES: Fridays – 10:00 / 11:00 AM.

PD Warrior

PD Warrior is not the same as working out in the gym, going for a walk or going for a swim. It is exercise specifically designed to slow the progression of Parkinson's through power, amplitude and high effort. What you miss out on by doing generic exercise is the opportunity to drive the brains natural ability to re-wire itself and protect itself. The course runs for 10 weeks at a cost of £155 and is for those who have been recently diagnosed or in the early or moderate stages of PD and who are reasonably fit and active.

PD Warrior 10 week course at Horfield Leisure Centre on Thursdays 15.30 – 16.30 Cost: £155

PD Warrior - continuation class

Tai Chi

Can help to ease some of the key problems associated with PD. Trials show that Tai Chi strengthens all parts of the body and can ease stress and anxiety. Balance and motor control are improved, resulting in fewer falls and slows the rate of decline. Movements are adapted so they can be done standing or sitting. Yoga for Parkinson’s

Class designed to help manage common PD symptoms through seated, standing and lying yoga poses adapted to each individual, working on strength, balance and flexibility. Includes guided relaxation.

Creative Workshops

Fully accessible workshops to explore different art mediums, nurture creative growth and develop critical thinking in a safe and encouraging environment. Workshops will be tailored to those attending whilst gently encouraging individuals to explore areas of creativity they may not have hadthe opportunity to do so before.
