An EMF Gauge (detector) is a common device used in the detection of ghost and spirits. The theory behind this device is that spirits are energy and this device picks up energy which may result in evidence that there is a spirit lingering around the ghost hunter.

This device can pick up normal explainable energy such as other electronic devices, power lines, circuit breakers, etc. An electromagnetic field is a physical field which is produced by electrically charged objects.

EMF Detector Tips


  • It is recommended to hold the EMF detector vertically with your hand and be aware not to block the top portion of the EMF detector with your hand.
  • Make sure you are using new batteries in the EMF detector. Old batteries will result in poor performance.
  • Use slow, steady and smooth movement while using the EMF detector. Rapid and jerky movement will affect the performance of the EMF detector and will provide negative results.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Many normal everyday items can provide high EMF results such as power lines, circuit boxes and other electrical equipment.
  • Take a base reading of a specific area, this way you will know what is the average EMF within that area or room.
  • It is usually recommended to set the sensitivity of the EMF detector to the most sensitive setting.
  • Tri-Field EMF detectors are usually the most recommended EMF detector to use for ghost hunting.
