Paranormal is a
general term that describes unusual experiences that lack a scientific
explanation, or phenomena alleged to be outside of science's current
ability to explain or measure.
Notably, paranormal phenomena also lack scientific evidence, as
detectable but not well explained phenomena such as dark matter or dark
energy are not commonly called paranormal.
Stories relating to paranormal phenomena are found in popular culture
and folklore, but the scientific community, as referenced in statements
made by organizations such as the United States National Science
Foundation, maintains that scientific evidence does not support
Find your way into the haunted Spook Manor, armed with your trusted "Spookstick" and send those troublesome ghouls packing.
Ghost: apparition, phantom, phantasm, wraith, revenant; shade, spook. Ghost, specter, spirit all refer to the disembodied soul of a person. A ghost is the soul or spirit of a deceased person, which appears or otherwise makes its presence known to the living: the ghost of a drowned child.
A specter is a ghost or apparition of more or less weird, unearthly, or terrifying aspect: a frightening specter.
Spirit is often interchangeable with ghost but may mean a supernatural being, usually with an indication of good or malign intent toward human beings: the spirit of a friend; an evil spirit.
A widespread belief concerning ghosts is that they are composed of a misty, airy, or subtle material.
Anthropologists link this idea to early beliefs that ghosts were the person within the person (the person's spirit), most noticeable in ancient cultures as a person's breath, which upon exhaling in colder climates appears visibly as a white mist.
In many traditional accounts, ghosts were often thought to be deceased people looking for vengeance, or imprisoned on earth for bad things they did during life.
The appearance of a ghost has often been regarded as an omen or portent of death. Seeing one's own ghostly double or "fetch" is a related omen of death.
White ladies were reported to appear in many rural areas, and supposed to have died tragically or suffered trauma in life. White Lady legends are found around the world.
Common to many of them is the theme of losing or being betrayed by a husband or fiancé. They are often associated with an individual family line, as a harbinger of death. When one of these ghosts is seen it indicates that someone in the family is going to die.
Poltergeist: (from German Polter, "noise" or "racket"; Geist, "spirit"), in occultism, a disembodied spirit or supernatural force credited with certain malicious or disturbing phenomena, such as inexplicable noises, sudden wild movements, or breakage of household items.
Poltergeists are also blamed for violent actions-throwing stones or setting fire to clothing and furniture. Such events are said to be sporadic, unpredictable, and often repetitive.
Demon: Religion, mythology, occultism and folklore describe a demon as a violent spirit. The word Demon comes from the Latin word Daemn meaning Spirit. The definition of demon is:
Some people consider demons as being non-human and therefore they have never walked the earth in a true physical form.
- An evil supernatural being; a devil.
- A persistently tormenting person, force, or passion: the demon of drug addiction.
- One who is extremely zealous, skillful, or diligent: worked away like a demon; a real demon at math.
- Variant of daimon.
A 'Demonic Possession' is described as a demon being able to possess those of the living and to take control of that person. Being able to use their body and speak using their physical form.
Some cultures believe that a demon can even possess animals, plants, the deceased or inanimate objects. Demonic possessions sometimes involves an exorcism which some religions recognize.
Apparitional Experience is characterized by the apparent perception of either a living being or an inanimate object without there being any material stimulus for such a perception. The person experiencing the apparition is awake, excluding dream visions from consideration.
In scientific or academic discussion, the term apparitional experience is to be preferred to the term ghost in respect of the following points:
1. The term ghost implies that some element of the human being survives death and, at least under certain circumstances, can make itself perceptible to living human beings. There are other competing explanations of apparitional experiences.
2. Firsthand accounts of apparitional experiences differ in many respects from their fictional counterparts in literary or traditional ghost stories.
3. The content of apparitional experiences includes living beings, both human and animal, and even inanimate objects.
