Encounter in Ruwa: The Ariel School Sighting - UFOs Over Zimbabwe
Sixty-two School Children See UFOs and Aliens - Ruwa, South Africa - September 16th, 1994

In total, there were 62 children outside of the school at the time, and most of the teachers were inside the school at a meeting. It was reported that only one adult was supervising the recess that morning, a mother of one of the children. She operated a snack bar for the students, selling soft drinks, candies, and other favorites.

There had been reports of UFOs in the skies over Zimbabwe only two days before, but it is unlikely that any of the students were aware of these reports. Ariel was a private elementary school, hosting students of all backgrounds.

Several of the children stated that they had seen three unknown flying objects in the skies over the school prior to the landing. Students saw the UFOs disappear then reappear in a different place in the sky. Finally, at least one of the UFOs either landed, or hovered just above the ground.

The UFO was only about 100 meters from the students at play. The object was in a heavily wooded area, which was off limits to the students for safety concerns. Soon, what the students described as a "small man" could be seen on the top of the UFO.

This was witnessed by 62 schoolchildren, who had little or no exposure to TV or popular press accounts of ufos. Cynthia Hind, a resident of Zimbabwe, MUFON’S coordinator for Africa, and author of the book UFOS OVER AFRICA, interviewed them the day after the encounter and had them draw pictures of what they had seen.

The following is a report of the incident from a UFO investigator named Cynthia Hind:

The Children of Ariel School - Case No. #96. Ruwa, Zimbabwe

By Cynthia Hind

On Friday September 16th, at approximately 10:15am, 62 children from Ariel School, a private primary school in Ruwa (about 20 km from Harare) were in their playing field for the mid-morning break. Suddenly, they saw three silver balls in the sky over the school. These disappeared with a flash of light and then reappeared elsewhere.

This happened three times and then they started to move down towards the school with one of them landing (or hovering) over a section of rough ground made up of trees, thorn bushes, and some brown-grey cut grass with bamboo shoots sticking up out of the ground.

The children are not allowed in this area although it is adjacent to their playing field and is not fenced off, because of snakes, spiders and perhaps other harmful creatures.

One can soon disappear from view while walking here, and there is only one very rough track used by tractors in an attempt to clear this area. There is a line of electricity pylons and according to one boy, the object followed along this line prior to landing. There is also some controversy as to whether the object landed on the ground or hovered above it.

One eyewitness, Barry D., said he had seen three objects flying over, with flashing red lights. They disappeared, and reappeared almost immediately, but somewhere else.

This happened about three times. Then they came and landed near some gum trees; Barry said the main one (object) was about the size of his thumb nail held at arm's length.

The reports were similar although some children were more observant than others. The consensus of opinion was that an object came down in the area where they indicated, about 100 metres from where they were at the edge of the school playing field.

Then a small man (approx 1 metre in height) appeared on top of the object.

He walked a little way across the rough ground, became aware of the children and disappeared.

He, or someone very like him, then reappeared at the back of the object.

The object took off very rapidly and disappeared. The little man was dressed in a tight-fitting black suit which was 'shiny' according to one observant girl (11 years of age).

He had a long scrawny neck and huge eyes like rugby balls. He had a pale face with long black hair coming below his shoulders.

I had suggested to Mr. Mackie prior to visiting the school and before the children had been interviewed, that he let the children draw what they had seen and he now has about 30-40 drawings, some of which are very explicit and clear, although some are rather vague.

The children's ages vary from 5/6 to 12 years. I have 22 photocopies of the clearer drawings as Mr. Mackie kindly allowed me to page through the pictures and choose those I wanted.

Most of the descriptions are similar but some of the craft are very obviously 'flying saucers', and I wonder how many of these children have had access to the media. Others are crude but more or less in this saucer shape.

The children vary in cultures: there are black, white, coloured and Asian children. One little girl said to me, 'I swear by every hair on my head and the whole Bible that I am telling the truth.'

I could see the pleasure on her face when I told her that I believed her.

The smaller children from 5-7 years were very frightened at the time and ran shouting 'Help me, help me.' When the older children asked why they were saying this, the reply was, 'He is coming to eat us.' I should think this applied more to the black African children who have legends of tokoloshies (evil spirits) eating children.

Creatures Communicated Through Their Eyes

The older students said that they felt that the creatures communicated with them somehow, sending the message that we humans are destroying our planet, polluting the environment in ways that will have dire consequences.

The Students felt the aliens were communicated to them claiming that "something is going to happen" (to our planet) and that we need to be careful of our technology. "We mustn't get too technologed".

The school children claimed that this message was communicated to them through the eyes of the beings. This type of communication is believed to be a form of telepathy which is basically the transfer of information on thoughts or feelings between individuals by means other than the "five classic senses".

It would appear that the children were given a warning about what type of actions we are doing as a whole towards our planet and the consequences that will follow.

Many people have speculated throughout the years that our technology has far exceeded our humanity and our political intelligence and this is very dangerous to the human civilization and the Earth.

It is also believed that even though the human race is destroying the planet Earth by its actions that the amount of destruction we would do to the planet would actually destroy all living creatures on Earth long before Earth would be destroyed itself.

Meaning, our actions would destroy ourselves as well as all living creatures, while the Earth would survive. It is believed that even if there was a huge nuclear war, the Earth would resume to near normal conditions after only a few hundred years.

Many UFO reports seem to indicate that occupants of UFOs appear to be extremely interested in Military bases, especially bases which possess nuclear weapons within their facilities.

It would appear that this is by no means a coincidence.

A famous quote from Albert Einstein states: "I don't know what weapons will be used in world war three, but in world war four people will use sticks and stones."

This warning has many truths behind it, much more than we may realize or even want to realize and it is possible that this alien species was warning us about such an incident.

62 Zimbabwe Children Witness a UFO and Aliens

One of the most extraordinary sightings of a UFO in recent times.

At the Ariel School in Ruwa, Zimbabwe, sixty-two children between the ages of eight and twelve reported seeing a UFO and strange beings during morning recess.

These children exclaim that they were given a message about our technology and how we are mistreating our planet.

In 1994, Harvard Professor of Psychiatry John E. Mack, M.D. traveled to Zimbabwe with research associate Dominique Callimanopulos.

The occupant of the craft was described as being about one meter (3 feet.) tall, with a slender neck, long black hair, and very large eyes.

He walked down the craft, and proceeded in the direction of the children.

When he noticed the children, he disappeared, and was next seen in the back of the UFO. Within moments, the craft took off, vanishing into the sky over the school.

Many of the children were understandably frightened, the little man had evoked many stories they had heard about demons and ghosts.

Some of the children ran to the mother who was attending the snack bar, but she did not believe their story, and continued with her duties.

Two of Ufology's most respected investigators researched the Ariel School sighting. Cynthia Hind, now deceased, was known as Africa's top notch researcher, and she was at the school the next day.

She requested the school's headmaster, Colin Mackie, to ask the children to make drawings of what they had seen the day before.

When Hind arrived at the school, there were some 35 various drawings and sketches waiting for her.

Most of the drawings were very similar in their depictions of the craft and being.

School children were told to draw pictures of what they had seen that day over the skies of Zimbabwe.

The drawings showed pictures of a UFO which landed in a field and a dark being with large black eyes.

Mr. Colin Mackie the headmaster of the school told Cynthia Hind that he
felt the children were telling the truth about what they had seen.

One of the students, a young girl, told Hind, "I swear by every hair
on my head and the whole Bible that I am telling the truth."

Dr. John Mack, along with researcher Dominique Callimanopulos visited Ruwa. The two men spent two days doing interviews with 12 of the children and their parents.

A few of the older students related that they felt they had communicated with the craft's occupants.

They were informed that we were were destroying Earth by polluting it, and unless we changed our ways, we would face a failing planet.

The Ruwa, Zimbabwe school sighting soon became news around the world, and was the subject of an episode of TV's "Sightings."

Dr. John Edward Mack believes the children were telling the truth and states that the children were retelling the events that they witnessed.

It would appear that this event affected the American psychiatrist as he felt that as hard as it is to believe it appears that these events did occur and that we are left with the rather disturbing fact that it seems to be a real incident of a close encounter with an extraterrestrial species.
Drawing of an alien next to the alleged craft which landed in a field near the school. The school children believe that they had communicated with the craft's occupants.

The children also stated that the aliens gave them a message and a warning about how we are treating our planet and the dire consequences that will follow.

Why Aliens and UFOs Come to Earth

Interview with Harvard professor John E. Mack about his discussion with the Dalai Lama about why aliens/ufos first came to earth, as well as alien concern about the destruction of the environment.

John Edward Mack, M.D. (October 4th, 1929–September 27th, 2004) was an American psychiatrist, writer, and professor at Harvard Medical School.

He was a Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer, and a leading authority on the spiritual or transformational effects of alleged alien abduction experiences.

In 1994, the Dean of Harvard Medical School appointed a committee of peers to review Mack's clinical care and clinical investigation of the people who had shared their alien encounters with him (some of their cases were written of in Mack's 1994 book Abduction).

In a BBC article, Angela Hind wrote, "It was the first time in Harvard's history that a tenured professor was subjected to such an investigation." Mack described the investigation as "Kafkaesque": he never quite knew the status of the ongoing investigation, and the nature of his critics' complaints shifted frequently, as most of their accusations against him proved baseless when closely scrutinized.

On Monday, September 27th, 2004 while in London to lecture at a T. E. Lawrence Society-sponsored conference, Mack was killed by a drunken driver heading west on Totteridge Lane. He was walking home from a dinner with friends when he was struck at 11:25 p.m. near the junction of Totteridge Lane and Longland Drive.

He lost consciousness at the scene of the accident and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The driver was arrested at the scene, and later entered a plea of guilty by careless driving whilst under the influence of alcohol.

Mack's family requested leniency for the suspect in a letter to the Wood Green Crown Court. "Although this was a tragic event for our family," the letter reads, "we feel [the accused's] behavior was neither malicious nor intentional, and we have no ill will toward him since we learned of the circumstances of the collision."

Ariel School UFO Landing 1994

Cynthia Hind interviewed the school children the day after the encounter and made them draw pictures of what they had seen.

The drawings the children drew all depicted the same thing. A dark being with large black eyes and a UFO with round windows running along the side of the craft.

One interesting feature the being had was long black hair. Most descriptions of aliens usually portray the typical slender look with large black eyes but black hair is quite uncommon.

Cynthia Hind unfortunately passed away on Monday, August 21st, 2000 following a short illness and battle with cancer.
This video is dedicated in memory to Cynthia Hind and her dedication to UFO research in Africa.

It is believed that these species that the 62 School Children witnessed were in fact what is known as the Greys. The descriptions as well as the telepathic abilities that the children describe fits the description of the Greys.

The only major discrepancies were that some of the children claimed the beings had long black hair and the body was the size of a human. But this could be explained by the telepathic abilities that are claimed the Greys possess.

It is possible that the Greys attempted to create the affect to the children of them being more human looking. As well as many of the children reported the beings looked like shadows which is believed to be a way that Greys camouflage themselves from human eyes.

Greys are typically depicted as grey-skinned diminutive humanoid beings that possess reduced forms of, or completely lack, external human organs such as noses, ears or penises. Their bodies are usually depicted as being elongated, having a small chest, and lacking in muscular definition and visible skeletal structure.

Their legs are shorter and jointed differently than one would expect in a human. Their limbs are often depicted as proportionally different than a human's; their humerus and thighs are the same lengths as their forearms and shins, respectively. They have been depicted as having three to five fingers and lacking opposable thumbs.

Greys are depicted as having unusually large heads in proportion to their bodies. They are depicted as having no hair anywhere on the body, including the face, and no noticeable outer ears or noses, but only small openings or orifices for ears and nostrils.

They are depicted as having very small mouths, and very large, opaque black eyes with no discernible iris or pupil. Sometimes Greys are alternately depicted as having no noticeable nostrils or mouths.

Some alien abduction reports have depicted variant skin colors such as blue-grey, green-grey, or purple-grey and some times not grey at all. The skin is typically described as being extremely smooth, almost as if made of an artificial material like rubber or plastic.

The eyes are often a focus of abduction claims. They are said to not move or focus in any observable way from the naked eye. Claims often describe a Grey staring into the eyes of an abductee when conducting mental procedures.

This staring is claimed to induce hallucinogenic states or directly provoke different emotions.

Although abduction claimants often say that the Grey was only inches from their face during the staring mindscan procedure, they often do not subsequently claim feeling breath or seeing the Grey's chest move from breathing.

Numerous interviews with witnesses have been released on the Internet with the encounter in Ruwa, and it is considered one of the best "close encounter" cases in UFO history.
