We will hold our next meeting on Tuesday,November 5, 2019, the first Tuesday of the month, at 7:00 p.m. The meeting will be held at the B. Calvin Jones Center for Archaeology at the Governor Martin House. The Center is located off Lafayette Street, between Seminole Drive and Myers Park Drive, at 1001 De Soto Park Drive. Reception begins at 6:30. We encourage you to bring a snack to share.

We will be welcoming Dr. Paulette McFadden, Supervisor, Public Lands Archaeology, Florida Bureau of Archaeological Research as she discusses the black market and it's impact on Florida's non-renewable cultural resources.

The buying and selling of artifacts on the Black Market is a multi-million-dollar industry that moves objects through a complex and well-organized network. Driven by various motives, individuals looking for artifacts to sell have significantly impacted archaeological sites on state-owned lands. This presentation discusses the magnitude of damage to archaeological sites caused by looting, traces illegally obtained artifacts through the black market network, and outlines the Training for Archaeological Resource Protection (TARP) program that was created specifically to partner with law enforcement for the protection of our non-renewable cultural resources.
