Historically, Pangkor was a refuge for local fishermen, merchants and pirates. In fact even In the 17th century, the Dutch had already built a fort in an effort to control the Perak tin trade. The ruins of this fort is one of the many tourist attractions on the island.
Today Pulau Pangkor is mainly promoted by the Perak State Tourism authorities as a budget tourist destination although fishing and fish products continue to be the major industries.
