About Me
I am an Associate Professor at the Applied Informatics department of University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki and head of the NetCloud research group. Before that I was an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Communications Technology in Leibniz University Hanover and a member of L3S research center. During 2008-2010, I was a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Computing Department of Lancaster University, UK, and at Telecom SudParis, France. I have also spent time at the Computer Lab of University of Cambridge (October 2013). I received a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Democritus University of Thrace in 2008, an M.Sc in Information Technology from University of Nottingham in 2001, and a B.Sc. in Computer Science from University of Crete in 2000.
My research work spans ML-assisted NFV orchestration (SFC-graph embedding, transformation, and multi-domain partitioning), network slicing orchestration (design and implementation of slicing orchestrators, cross-slice communication), programmable dataplanes with P4 (lightweight in-band network telemetry), deterministic/time-sensitive networks (failure handling with TSN and segment routing), datacenter network fabrics (scalable source routing), edge computing (smart offloading for location-based services), as well as IoT digital twinning. Prominent outcomes of our research work include distributed network processing architectures (MIDAS, DistNSE), multi-provider service mapping mechanisms (Nestor), open-source NFV orchestration platforms (TeNOR), and orchestration platforms for cross-slice communication (MESON). Further information about our research is available at the NetCloud website.
Project-wise, I am currently a Principal Investigator (PI) of the Horizon Europe NEPHELE project, I have been co-PI of the EU-BRA H2020 NECOS project, co-lead of the EU H2020 5GinFIRE COSMOS project, and PI of EU FP7 T-NOVA and CONFINE projects. I have also been the Scientific Coordinator of MESON project (co-financed by EU and Greece, under the "RESEARCH - CREATE - INNOVATE" action). Overall, I have secured more than 1M euro of third-party funding.
I have co-chaired several conference and workshops (IEEE ICIN 2024, IFIP/IEEE CNSM 2022, IFIP/IEEE Networking TENSOR 2020-2023, IEEE NetSoft S4SI 2020-2021, IEEE CNSM SR+SFC 2018-2019, IEEE INFOCOM SWFAN 2016-2017, IFIP WWIC 2016-2017) and often serve in conference organizing (e.g., IEEE NoF, IEEE CloudNet, IEEE COMSNETS) and program committees (e.g., IFIP Networking, IEEE NETSOFT, IFIP/IEEE NOMS, IEEE ICC, IEEE GLOBECOM, IEEE PIMRC). I am also an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Network and Service Management, a Senior Member of IEEE, and a Counselor of the IEEE Student Branch at my university.
