This medium-sized theropod was likely the apex predator in Britain during the Early Cretaceous. Though initially considered an allosaurid and later a carcharodontosaur, Neovenator is now known to have belonged to a family of carnosaurs more closely related to the latter than the former. This family, known as the neovenatorids, consists of mid-Cretaceous genera known from crude remains and uncovered in places as far apart as China and Argentina.
