The first Mario RPG was a pretty darned good one. If you're reading this to see if you should or shouldn't buy it, I suggest you open a window for eBay.

The game starts like most Mario games do--Princess Toadstool is kidnapped by Bowser, and Mario dashes off to rescue her. But just when Mario defeats Bowser and begins to untie Toadstool from the ropes binding her, something unexpected happens...

Super Mario RPG is the most "traditional" RPG of the 5. It features "buy your weapons and armor, learn magic spells, have more characters join your party," much like Final Fantasy (which Square also made).

As far as a portable remake (for the GBA or DS) goes, forget about petitions and stuff. There have been petitions on the subject for years and years. Also, if you're a dirty pirate who would put a SMRPG ROM on a device that would allow SNES gameplay on the DS (or GBA), you still cannot. Super Mario RPG is one of a few games that depend on a co-processor, so playing it on a SNES-on-DS emulator is impossible (as of now). Sorry to break this to you.

It's been announced that SMRPG will make it to the Wii Virtual Console in countries it was released in. This, unfortunately, excludes the United Kingdom and other countries. Keep your hopes high, my British friends, Nintendo may surprise us!

(I am presently recovering the SMRPG walkthrough. If you really nead it, you can see it on the old Tripod site. --Max)
