Painswick, the original ‘Cherry & Whites’ was formed in 1872 and is the oldest village rugby club in England. In 1873 we loaned our shirts to the newly formed Gloucester RFC and since then they, as the more famous ‘Cherry & Whites’, have achieved significant success within National Rugby meanwhile Painswick have enjoyed the camaraderie of the wonderful game of Rugby at a slightly lower level.
However, Painswick RFC remains one of the stalwarts of rugby in the County of Gloucestershire, a real rugby county. We currently play our 1st XV rugby in the Gloucester Premier league and field a second XV in the Merit league. The real strength of the club is the comradeship of those who play their rugby at Broadham Fields. We start building this team spirit at an early stage with our Mini/Junior section and this leads to many of these young players finding their way into the senior sides and 1st XV. We offer qualified coaching at all levels and encourage our players to progress; currently players who have started their careers at Painswick are playing for National sides, Birmingham, Moseley and Worcester whilst one of our past players has been part of the successful League Champions London Wasps team and progressed to play with England and the Lions.
Broadham Fields, the home of Painswick RFC, is a superb sports complex wholly owned by the rugby club. Two full sized Rugby Pitches, a training area, with full flood lighting recently completed, a large sports hall, for ‘out of the weather’ workouts when required, six changing rooms and importantly a full kitchen and two bars are available. We also provide facilities for other local clubs in the form of floodlit Tennis Hard Courts, a Hockey Pitch and a Full Cricket facility during the summer.
If you live in, or are moving to the area and are interested in joining a friendly and successful, well set up, local rugby club then contact me at Painswick RFC.
