Deze overwegend grijsbruine boleet vertoont evenals de Gelige ruigsteelboleet (L. crocipodium) een duidelijke craquelé hoed bij ouder worden, waarbij de overwegend grijsbruine schubjes afsteken tegen de lichtere achtergrond. Poriën bleek crème, bruin wordend bij kneuzing. Steel wittig tot bleek oker, geheel bedekt met fijne zwartbruine schubjes, vaak in lengterijen aan de top, naar de voet met grovere schubjes. Vlees vuilwit, langzaam roze tot paars verkleurend bij doorsnijden. In de literatuur wordt ook het synoniem L. carpini gebruikt.

Ectomycorrhizapartner van Haagbeuk op humusarme klei. Vrij zeldzaam, vooral langs de grote rivieren, in de Achterhoek en Zuid-Limburg. Juli-November. Wijd verspreid in Midden-Europa.
