BSA Youth Protection Training

posted Jun 26, 2010, 7:08 AM by Mike Beagles   [ updated Aug 4, 2011, 5:30 AM ]

The Boy Scouts of America is committed to the safety of the boys and young men we serve.  As such, they have mandated Youth Protection training as a minimum requirement for all registered Adult Leaders AND anyone who will be serving as an Adult Walker during Day Camp.  The course is free, is available online, and takes about 20 minutes to complete.  Click here for instructions on setting up an account on MyScouting.Scouting.org.  This, and other courses are available here.

ScoutTrack

ScoutTrack is the Pack Management system we use to manage our membership information, attendance, and advancement.  The system is used by parents to log their scouts' achievements outside of den meetings, such as belt loop requirements, by den leaders to log scouts' attendance and achievements during den meetings, and by pack leaders to manage advancement and membership.A few facts about ScoutTrack:
  1. ScoutTrack is web-based.  There is no software to install...all you need is a computer with a browser and access to the web to use the system.  Just point your browser to www.scouttrack.com.

  2. ScoutTrack can be updated by both parents and Den Leaders.  This means an end to manual spreadsheet updates for achievements.  When the boys complete an activity outside of a den meeting, parents can go online to view and update the status of the various achievements, electives, and sports & academics belt loops and pins.  Den Leaders can update these activities that are completed in den meetings.

  3. ScoutTrack provides advancement reports to Den and Pack Leaders.  This will improve the accuracy and timeliness of the awards and recognition that the boys have earned.  When the Scout has met the requirements for a Progress Towards Ranks bead, Webelos badges, badge of rank, Arrow Point, Belt Loop, or Pin, the Den Leader and Pack Leader sees it on a report and can make sure it is ordered/purchased, and that the Scout receives it at the next Den or Pack meeting, as appropriate.

  4. ScoutTrack keeps you in touch and informed.  This means that you will not miss important dates and announcements.  The calendar can also display scouts' birthdays!  Using ScoutTrack, you can email the members of your Den, the Den or Pack leaders, update your son's membership record, and view or print a Den Roster or Pack Directory.  There is also a calendar and bulletin board feature where you can view the schedule and announcements for your den and the pack.  Calendar events can be set up by the Den and Pack Leaders to provide email reminders, if desired.
So, how do you get started?

An email has been sent from the ScoutTrack system to the email addresses I have on file for each parent in the Pack.  If you did NOT receive this email, please check your Deleted Items, Junk Mail, or Spam folder.  The email is generated by something called a "mailbot", which some email programs identify as unwanted mail.  If you find the email in one of these folders, you will need to mark this email sender as a trusted sender or "Not Spam" -- this is called different things, depending on your email program.

Once you find the email, you will need to activate your account in ScoutTrack.  I have written and attached a ScoutTrack User Guide for Parents, which provides detailed instructions on how to activate your account and perform other tasks in ScoutTrack.  I have posted this user guide in the Pack Documents area.

All of the Scouts in our Pack have been put into the system by den and I have put as many advancement/achievement details as I have in for each one (this is a bit more complete for the boys in my Den.  The other Den Leaders may be updating their Scouts' records -- check with them to find our more.

I have spent a good bit of time in the ScoutTrack over the past couple of months, so, although I don't want to become "tech support", I can probably answer any questions or feedback you may have about it.  Please email any questions you may have to this email account.  If the same things are being asked frequently enough, I will probably update the user guide with a new procedure, or possibly add a FAQ section to it.
