About

Join the Cub Scouts and have fun while learning.

The Mission.
Since its beginning, the Cub Scout program has been a fun and educational experience concerned with values. Besides providing a positive place where boys can enjoy safe, wholesome activities, Cub Scouting focuses on building character, improving physical fitness, teaching practical skills, and developing a spirit of community service.

The Pack:
A Cub Scout Pack is made up of Dens, or smaller groups of boys all of the same age and/or grade level. The Dens are identified by rank:
  • Tigers - First Grade (or age 7)
  • Wolves - Second Grade (or age 8)
  • Bears - Third Grade (or age 9)
  • Webelos I - Fourth Grade (or age 10)
  • Webelos II - Fifth Grade
Although many boys start as Tigers, they can join at any time. Dens meet 2-3 times per month as a group, to work on projects toward their rank, to prepare something for the Pack meeting, to work toward earning elective awards, or any other activity they like. They often meet in the home of the Den Leader, the adult volunteer who organizes and runs the den meetings, or they may rotate between the homes of the den members. They may go on field trips.

Once per month during the school year (September to June), all the Dens meet together as a Pack. The Cubmaster leads the Pack Meeting, which has been planned and organized with the help of the Pack Committee. The Pack Committee consists of all the Den Leaders, plus other adults who help run things "behind the scenes" for the Pack. Pack meetings often follow a theme, and are held in the Richer School Cafeteria, although sometimes they are held at other locations.

The Pack also organizes activities outside of den and pack meetings. Past activities have included overnights at the Museum of Science, Higgins Armory, Boulder Morty's Indoor Rockclimbing, and the Battleship Massachusetts, winter freeze-out camping, as well as one-day activities such as hiking, bowling, swimming, and fishing. The Nashua Valley Council also sponsors events for all the Packs in the region, such as a Polar Bear Derby, Chuck Wagon Derby, Spookaree, and Webelos Woods.

Boys crosse over to the next rank level in the spring. They have a rank badge that they work to achieve that is specific to each rank. We generally try to help boys to finish all the requirements for their rank badge by April or May, when we hold our annual Blue and Gold Banquet. Although each boy only works on the rank for his age group in a given year, any boy who has just joined Cub Scouting must first earn a Bobcat award before he can be awarded his rank for that year.

During the summer months, we will occasionally have Pack activities, although Den and Pack meetings are suspended for the summer.

Details and current positions are detailed in our Troop Leadership Chart and in the Troop Roster.
