What is Cub Scouting?

Cub Scouting is FUN! No matter what grade you are in, kindergarten through fifth, it can be a blast. Do you like to learn by doing? This is just the place. You can learn to tie knots, set up a tent, or shoot a bow and arrow. Have you ever cooked a meal on a campfire? Sent a secret code to a friend? Built a birdhouse? Hiked in the forest? Earn rewards for doing these things and more in Cub Scouts. Cub Scouts is the first and largest of the Scouting Programs offered by the Boy Scouts of America. Cub Scouts Belong to a Pack and Den

Every Cub Scout is a member of a Cub Scout Pack. A pack is a large group of Scouts.

Pack 141 is divided into smaller groups called Dens. Each Den has about six to eight Scouts, sometimes more. All of the Cub Scouts in a Den are about the same age: Lions (Kindergarten), Tigers (1st grade), Wolves (2nd grade), Bears (3rd grade) and Webelos (4th and 5th grade).

Cub Scout Packs belong to a church, a school, or some other group of people in your community or neighborhood. Pack 141 is chartered by the Sycamore United Methodist Church. This group makes sure your pack has good adult leaders, a place to meet, and exciting things to do. The group gets help from the Boy Scouts of America, which is part of Scouting around the world.

Cub Scouts Do Things and Go Places!

Have you been to the Sycamore Police Station and talked to the policemen on duty? Or visited the Sycamore Fire Station and sat in the driver's seat of the pumper truck? Or visited one of DeKalb's local radio stations and sat in the news anchor's chair? Or hiked in the forest seen a waterfall? Or visited the Nature Center at Russell Forest in Genoa and pet a turtle? These are some of the places you could go with your Den. You can also build a pinewood derby car and race it on the track and be able to build a rocket and race it to the stars in the Pack rocket derby. Cub Scouting means "Doing!" Scouts have lots of things to do as Cub Scouts. Hiking, Camping, Sports, Songs, Skits, Craft, Games and more. Scouting has something to offer every boy. Cub Scouts do things that are always fun and offer opportunities for leaning.

Cub Scouts Earn Awards

While you're having fun, you'll also be earning badges and awards. You'll work on projects with your parents or other adults in your family, and all of you will feel good about the things you accomplish. When you have earned a badge, you and an adult member of your family take part in a ceremony. The badge is given to the adult, and he or she then gives it to you in front of the whole pack. This is a way of saying "thank you" to your family for their help in earning your award.

The most popular and recognizable awards for Cub Scouts are the advancement awards. Scouts complete requirements by earning age appropriate Adventure Loops to advance and earn their badges of rank: Lion Cub, Tiger, Bobcat, Wolf, Bear, Webelos, and the Arrow of Light Award. The Arrow of Light is the highest award in Cub Scouting. Webelos Scouts also earn activity badges.

Cub Scouts can earn many other awards and medals too, sometimes by themselves and sometimes as members of their Den or Pack 141. They can earn or help their Pack earn Quality Unit awards, religious emblems, the Emergency Preparedness Award, the Outdoor Activity Award, or the World Conservation Award.

When you earn an award in Cub Scouting, you learn new skills. You also get to use your new skills and your new knowledge in projects and demonstrations. You show what you know. People get to see what you've learned as a Cub Scout.

Cub Scout Pack 141 has been chartered by the Sycamore United Methodist Church of Sycamore Illinois since 1956 and is one of the largest Cub Scout Packs in DeKalb County.
